Can Digital Codes effect Grades?669

Collector Verde private msg quote post Address this user
I like to read my comics digitally so I can immediately bag and board my books. Does taking off the digital code cover effect over all grade?

Yes, I actually created a thread last week to ask the same question. If the code sticker is removed the highest possible grade will be 9.6

I wander if something like that would be noted on the label? I would assume it would be

I think grading it as normal and having a notation for digital sticker removed would be best that way for those who care they know and those who dont know the books is 9.8+ otherwise.

I'd imagine that an otherwise 9.8 book with the sticker removed might get a checkmark qualifier on the grade

Yes, we note it on the label.

Yes, if that is the only thing keeping the book from being a 9.8, it will get a 9.6 checkmark.

I'm just getting back into collecting again and have no idea what this "Sticker" you speak of is. Can you explain it and if it's not part of the comic art work why is it important. Thank you for your help in advance.

@Rafel Many comics now include a code that can be redeemed for a digital copy of the comic that you can read on your computer, ipad, etc. these codes are hidden under a peelable label or sticker.

It's not particularly important, which is why a book can still receive a very high grade without it (9.6), but grading is a nitpicky business and everything about a book's condition is taken into consideration. In order to get the highest possible grades, the book has to appear as good (often better) as it would have fresh off the printing press

Thank you Dielinfinite. When was kid growing up we collected comic books as fun hobby. The art work was fabulous. The characters looked like real people. Nothing like todays so called artists. Too much shade, muscles that are so big you wonder how they can stand and weapons that are so heavy and bulky where were they hiding them. I quit collecting in 82' and i'm just getting back into it. As with most things it's gone from "Fun" to a "Business". I want "Fun" again. This forum has been so informative to me it's like WOW (a good "WOW". Thank you again for all you posts.

Comics today, and always have, do what art always does with heroes and that's idealize and enlarge them. Simply look at Greek sculpture for one such example. Heroes were depicted as giants with their bodies toned and idealized to such a degree that it couldn't possibly be representative of real people. Even in the Gold and Silver Age, maybe the art wasn't so detailed or exaggerated, but Superman was still tall and muscular beyond the normal, how long has Batman been described as the "perfect human specimen"? Hell, Captain America is a "super soldier" and literaly embodies the engrandizing and idealization of our heroes.

Weapons, too, have often been exaggerated. Beowulf's Hrunting was said to have been tempered in blood and never failed those who wielded it (until, of course, it did), or Mjiolnir, Thor's hammer which was said to level mountains.

As for the "fun", well, that's always up how the end user chooses to i terface with their hobby. You can choose to pay cover price for any new comic off the newstand, roll it up and put it in your back pocket today same as you could 20 years ago, same as you could 50 years ago. Important or popular issues certainly have always demanded a premium, whether it means you have to trade more more books to get it from your friend or pay extra to buy it off a guy on ebay. Of course when comics were young they had neither the audience they have today nor had they built up decades of history, coupled with increased scarcity, that drives demand and prices up.

Still, if you don't want to play that game at all, the paperback market makes just about any issue, classic or modern, easily available for purchase, reading and enjoyment.

The number of ways one can enjoy and interact with comics has certainly grown and because of that growth you'll find more people whose enjoyment of comics may not be simply buying and reading comics, which is certainly what you'll find here, the message board of a service auxiliary to comics as a whole.

I still get that "Fun" feeling when looking at Golden, Silver and Bronze age comic books and buying them when I can. As for the newer stuff I'll leave that to the history books and story tellers. Thank you again. I enjoy your prospective on this.

Additionally I would say Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Geoff Johns, Warren Ellis, Grant Morrison, Mark Waid, Kurt Busiek, Peter David and Mark Millar. Read!

Well, I would still promote modern comics. It is a great time for readers because you have a wealth of great material not only from the big but from any number of smaller publishers too. If you don't like what the big two are doing then seek out the wares from smaller publishers. All genres and art styles are out there and only the lazy or unwilling cannot find something that will meet their standards of good or "fun".

Yes I do read and enjoy older books as well but I just don't get as much enjoyment from them as I used to because I find much of the material too dated or not very relevant any more. That's not to say that I do not respect them any more, I just don't get as much out of them any more.

I can tell you that it sure gets frustrating when all you here is complaining about modern book and you find it that the person is really complaining about Marvel and DC. They don and won't read anything else. They take a big wide brush and paint everything the same colour. Those of us who enjoy moderns do not usually return the favor and cry and moan about the older books (and there is a ton of crap older books).

I agree, I think everybody I listed above currently has a monthly comic coming out.

Grrr I just pulled out my 5 Avenging Spiderman #9s out of my short box and realized all of them have the missing sticker! How? I do NOT KNOW! I'm debating now if I should get them signed by Kelly Sue and Dodson since it will knock the grading down.

@Gabriel85301 They are still eligible for 9.6's with the stickers missing, only 9.8 and higher will get downgraded.
