Saw this on eBay. Noted that the signatures failed VSP. Would you buy it? clickable text |

Why would you unless you really love the art. It is meant as a deception.

I'd give $3.99 for it. | ||

I have been watching this since it posted. As for me, i will be staying clear from it, buying items like this that is not verified is 50/50 for me. If im paying good money for an item it better be official. But i do see that people have been bidding on it since it was posted.

That's scary as they will probably try to flip it as genuine

That's a bummer! I would maybe try to reach out to Todd to see if he remembers this piece.

Quote:Originally Posted by Towmater I can totally see why it failed VSP. While it has the general look of McFarlane's signature, the devil's in the details. Here's my McFarlane signature that did pass VSP (I got it signed myself so I know for sure it's genuine): While there are variations in every signature, the F and E just seem way too off. The shape and spacing of the rest of the letters also differ significantly. The Stan Lee signature also seems a bit off: |

@dielinfinite Nice observations. The McFarlane signature that failed VSP looks like the letters all stand apart individually whereas his verified signatures look to flow a bit with the letters connecting. More like an actual autograph. I'd stay away from that book.

I found this comic that is in a CGC SS slab now. Is it just me or does it look like someone tried to copy this on the book that is listed on eBay? To me, it looks like a bad attempt at forged art and signatures. That's just my opinion. The only reason I'd buy the fake one is to destroy it!! |

That's definitely a forged McFarlane signature and sketch.

I think it is nice that he says his friends verify the sketch and signatures as authentic after seeing them, despite CBCS's findings.

There is a similar, verified one on ebay right now, too Notice the consistent quality of the art and signatures across the Signature Series and Verified books compared to the one in the first post. |

For me, this second drawing really nails it!! The manner in which an artist draws is as unique as his signature if not more unique. When you start comparing marker strokes to marker strokes, the fake is done in a totally different style than McFarlane. Look especially at the forehead. It almost looks like one broad stroke with maybe a pause or two. The other two examples are shorter smoother strokes. Plus, on the second example, which is one the same cover, Todd did not draw all the way through the title. And the eye swoops up closer to the top of the head in both McFarlane examples. In fact, McFarlane's spidey heads are just more egg shape in general. If you ever watch the videos that Todd puts up of his live drawing, you will see that he is pretty consistent in how he draws. I'm no where near an expert, and I'm sure I'm missing a LOT of signs that a true art expert would pick up on, but the drawing looks more and more like it's bogus.

You pretty much nailed it Jesse. I think it's such a poor forgery though that an expert isn't even needed.

It sold for nearly $150 (+ $19 shipping). I guess that means that most people didn't believe it was real or else it'd have gone for a lot more (the verified one I posted is still way overpriced, though) |

Seller: "It failed CBCS certification, but hey my unnamed friend who's expertise are who knows what swears the sigs are authentic." Buyer: "Shut up and take my $150!" There's a sucker born every minute. |

I wonder if the buyer was uninformed and didn't know what VSP was, didn't read the listing, or something else. The seller was upfront about the "issues" with the book. I wouldn't have bought it. |

@Towmater I certainly wouldn't fault someone for buying it if they legitimately liked the artwork, regardless of who actually drew it, but I certainly couldn't justify paying that much for it.

If it's fake: It's fake. It wouldn't matter to me if I liked the artwork, the fake sigs mean it's tarnished to me .. I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

You can tell it took whomever time to draw out the signatures like this. Authentic sigs are very "quick" and they have a fluid-like look to them. |

I took one look at it and could tell that wasn't Stan Lee's signature. Furthermore, the F and E just aren't Todd's. Easy forgery.
