1st Silverage Riddler, Penguin, Scarecrow & Two-Face6543

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being very desirable and 1 not desirable. How desirable are the 1st silverage appearances of the Riddler, Penguin, Scarecrow and Two-Face? Desirability solely based on their 1st silverage apprarance, not grade of the books.

Batman 155 1st Penguin
Batman 171 1st Riddler
Batman 189 1st Scarecrow
Batman 234 1st Two-Face

Are these books significant keys?

I'm trying to determine if I should slab these books based on their 1st silverage appearances alone.

All of those are wall books at comic book conventions. Desirability depends on how much someone is interested in a particular character.

Of those, it looks like Scarecrow & Two-Face are the more desired books, but only by a small margin. Mind you, that was based on a very quick e-bay search, not deep research.

That could just be because the covers are very cool & prominently feature the villains.

My personal rank would be Scarecrow, Two-Face, Riddler, Penguin. I'm not a big fan of the Penguin Batman 155 cover, or character for that matter.

Thank you for your comments. The grades of my books are mid grades (probably somewhere between 5.0 and 7.0) but was wondering if the "keyness" of the books alone are worthy of slabbing.

Thanks guys!!

There are other 1st silverage appearances from DC that are worth a mint...Showcase #4/Flash in particular. I think 1st silverage Hawkman Brave/Bold #34 is pretty pricey too. I know the 1st silverage Flash is a different character than his goldenage counterpart but its interesting to see these large spreads between values.

I like Batman #234, because it has a great cover. But it isn't really the first silver age Two-Face, for (heh) two reasons:

One, Batman #234 came out late in 1971. But the Bronze age really started in 1970 ... usually stated as the first Green Lantern / Green Arrow (#76) by Adams and O'Neil.

And two, the first (and really, only) Two-Face silver age appearance was World's Finest #173. (And while that issue did recap the character, the actual "appearance" of Two-Face was someone else.)

Anyway, I think #234 is more valuable, and more collectible, than World's Finest #173. So I'd still recommend going for that one. Or even better, get Batman #232 with the first Ra's al Ghul, or #251 with the awesome Joker cover.

All of the Batman SA/early bronze age 1st appearances have been climbing in value at a fast pace for several years now. All of the books you mention are slab worthy.

Batman 181 with the first app of Poison Ivy is the most sought after key from that period of time. Tedsaid mentions 232 and 251. There is also Batman 227 (classic Adams cover swipe) and 222 (Beatles)

That's a great collection! But don't neglect the Detective comics from that era, too. There's #400 (first Man-bat, and classic N.Adams cover), #405 (first League of Assassins), and #411 (first Talia). And of course #359 is huge these days ... first appearance of Batgirl.

Also, #369 is nice to have. It is the fourth S.A. Catwoman, the third Batgirl, and the first superhero art (Elongated Man story) by Neal Adams. (That same month Neal Adams did his first superhero covers: Action Comics #356 and Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #79.)

Perhaps the top four worst villains ever. Yet part of the history of Batman, and therefore very significant.

I don't like any of them. But I think Joker is a joke also. So....................

I like my Batman to be after Bane, KGBeast, Catwoman, etc. Someone not an embarrassment to the Villain Union.
