Should I grade no Tattooz ASM 238?6527

I recently got an Amazing Spider-Man 238 with the tattooz insert present but the actual tattoos (neatly) cut out. From an old thread it sounds like CBCS would start grading it from 8.5 if the book were otherwise pristine (which it isn't, although it's fairly solid at first pass). Should I get it graded if it isn't especially meaningful to me? Any guesses as to what a mid-range copy might go for? |

If you're doing it to sell it then no. I wouldn't. If it had some sentimental attachment, which you already stated it does not, then no. If you're looking to sell, just do so raw. I don't think a mid range copy with no tattooz would justify the cost of grading and shipping twice. Just my opinion.

You should look on eBay and comic link and other auction sites to see how cgc or cbcs grades them without the tatoo. I believe it might get a green label of death on a cgc (qualified grade) or they may just note that it is without a tatoo. The cbcs graded copy I have has a note on the label that says it includes the tatoo. This isn't like an insert like mark jewelers where some had them and some didn't. I believe all copies had them at one time...so it likely will be considered incomplete or take a grade hit. What grade do you think it is before the tatoo? It might not be worth it anyway if it's VF or less. At least you have the tatoo and would likely get a higher price raw than slabbed...especially if you can match it up perfectly. |

The same tattooz were in Fantastic Four #252 which is a cheap book. Maybe you can get them that way and then your slabbed ASM 238 will be complete.

Quote:Originally Posted by BrianGreensnips Yeah, I know that. Problem with that idea is that the Tatooz are bound into the book. Unless you happen to work at a printing press and have access to the machine that can remove staples without evidence of tampering, and reset them, you will get a restored label (married pages). A friend of mine, who has worked as a 1st pressman for 15+ years, told me that could be done, in theory, at least. He never tried it. It would require a good amount of skill, you'd have to be good with your hands, the machine, and be a competent presser as well, as a press would be needed after the staples were reset....and CBCS/CGC know what to look for. |

Quote:Originally Posted by Drogio The OP said it would be a 8.5, so even if the OP's grading is dead on, and CGC/CBCS (did not downgrade the book in any way for the missing tattoz(which I don't believeto be the case) it would be a wash out or even a bit of a loss, if sold slabbed instead of sold raw. This is the sort of book that I'd dry clean/press, to increase eye appeal, and just sell raw via BIN at around $100. |

Thanks for the input, gang. Just to clarify a bit: my comment about the 8.5 is based on this thread from 2 years ago https://forum.cbcscomics.com/topic/1483/page/1/asm--238-no-tatooz/ . Ignoring the tattooz (and like I said, just going from a quick look and not a thorough grading) I think the book might be in the 8-9 range, particularly after a press. So on the whole I'm guessing CBCS would give it maybe a 7 or top out at an 8. I think at the least I'll hold on to it for a bit and think about what to do. I'm not a huge Spidey/Hobgoblin fan, but I do like having first appearances... |

But I have a 5.0/6.0 raw copy without the tattoos and have considered buying a FF 252 just to have a set to go with it. |
