Not as bad as a tape pull but AARGH!!6479

Collector CopperAgeKids private msg quote post Address this user
So, last week I hit upon a very rare copper variant book.*

This book is one of the rarest copper variants out there.

Hit the BIN, asked the seller to ship the books bagged/boarded in a box, with the xxx, in the middle of the stack.

Received the books, in a bubblewrap mailer, books were bundled together.

All 5 books were not bagged/boarded.

The seller used the cardboard sandwich method, put post it's over the tape, to prevent the books from sticking to the tape.

One of the books was shifted loose from the stack, leaving the 4 books left together....

...having the xxx in the middle of the stack allowed the books around it to absorb shipping damage, as much as could be.

The xxx picked up a few stress lines on the back cover, which is all white.

FC suffered no damage whatsoever.

The stress lines will press out, which would have rendered the book at a solid 9.8...

So, I carefully cut the tape loose and pulled the 5 books out.

Took the xxx in my left hand, plopped the other 4 books down on the table.

I proceeded to walk the xxx to my basement, to lie it on a flat surface, intil I got around to pressing it.

All the while, the shoe lace on my left foot was loose, was flopping around.

I haven't put the AC in my windows yet, too hot and bothered to bother tying my left shoe lace.

I have also been walking with a bit of a limp on my left foot for the past month and change, too laxy to see a doctor.

So, while I was opening the basement door, I had a tight fit as there is a big package of paper towels by the basement door and a bag of dog food.

I wouod have normally had the dexterity to handle this....but not today.

I misstepped slightly, and consequently, the raw book took a bit of a shake in my left hand.

The book now has a color breaking spine tick, center of the spine.

It isn't too deep; it may not prevent the book from hitting 9.8 after I press it.

But it likely will....if it is really hammered, it may even get a 9.4.

Title of book redacted.

I too have damaged a few books, consequently I hate scotch tape with a passion, and carefully remove all scotch tape from any bag I have. I can commiserate and I probably out clumsy everybody dropping books, dumping out boxes, etc. Been pretty lucky though

I have not been doing this long, but I am amazed how many people ship books without boards, and sometimes bags. Or double or triple books in a bag, no board. If they don’t say in the listing, I never assume.

Who does this? Why not just roll them into a bundle, tape around them, then stick a mailing label and stamp on them?

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user
When my show racks full of slabbed comics came crashing down I shared pictures of the Carnage here.

It might be therapeutic for you to share a couple pictures of the damaged book in this thread.

Scotch tape I can deal with. What grinds my gears is when sellers tape comics to cardboard using shipping tape...And even worse when they cut the cardboard to the size of the comic. I need a scalpel to extract the book from its cardboard surroundings, and sometimes involves carefully cutting the bag to free the comic.

And then there's those who wrap it in a priority mail paper envelopes and seal it and use packing tape to adhere it to the shipping box...again, need a scalpel,to free it...but this time coming in blind.

The cardboard sandwich method is great but...

1) Bag & board each comic. It helps protect the corners.
2) Bundle them in a magazine bag. You want the comics to be able to slide or shift a very little bit. It has a dampening affect when a box is subjected to extreme forces like being thrown against a brick wall or hard floor. The magazine bag is a cushion that helps prevent the comic itself from sliding in the bag/board step above. Think of your seat belt's function in a car wreck. If it was excessively tight and rigid, it would cut into you when a wreck ocurred.
3) Shipping tape is fine IF you make little pull tap handles for the recipient to use. Instead of taping over the cardboard and having it lay completely flat, you lay it flat enough to hold the stack and then fold the tape over itself somewhere in the last couple of inches.

I haven't seen any raw copies listed, either.
