itโ€™s up to you to sort out if it is or isnโ€™t a newsstand printing! ๐Ÿ˜

Iโ€™m not sure what all the fuss is about, I believe I sorted this out back on page one.

Here are the instructions in one sentence:

Post a returnable comic book with death on the cover.

Easy peasy ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I will confess, the first post is too large and I skimmed over it. I didn't catch the part about it needing to include a dead body. I thought the title of the thread was a commentary on the newsstand being dead.
I think I'm just going to ignore these threads in the future. Too many "if this, then that" requirements. No hard feelings, I just never cared about the contest aspect of these threads. I just like seeing the covers.

As I said you done fine. I predict one of the barcode entries will win in the end.

Hope you reconsider, if I recollect correct you've posted some awesome comics in the past. Debates, loophole discussion, early or multiple voting, and people missing the subject is just part of the fun of the contest. It's a unique part of the forum that produces covers we may not otherwise see.๐Ÿบ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Donโ€™t forget, direct editions can also have barcodes.

I won't rule out a post, but the contest aspect is the least appealing to me. Some of the themes don't align with my collecting interests.

Does a Direct Edition of this book even exist?

That site is filled with misinformation that greatly dilutes and devalues the bits of legitimate information, because people who don't know any better won't know how to tell which is which.

I would recommend against using it.

PS. The UPC code appeared on books starting in 1976. The Direct market books started with Feb, 1977 Marvels.

I was under the impression that Marvel tested the Direct marketing program in late 1976/early 1977, but it officially went company-wide in 1979.

Hmmmm....

Sure, I can go with "test" for these, but they were the first Direct editions, even if they were only testing them in a few titles (which is true) and went company wide with June, 1979 cover dates (also true.)

I think, the issue with me is, when people say "the first Direct market versions were Marvel in 1979", that's not precisely true. And, because of the decades long assumption that the "fat diamonds" and "skinny diamonds" were reprints, aided and abetted by Overstreet, it's probably better to mention that the first expressly Direct market marked books were those Marvels of Feb, 1977 cover dates.

Fair...?

(Here's an example, for those who don't know what's being talked about: )

This IS NOT a "Whitman", since Marvel didn't make "Whitmans", and while, yes, Whitman/Western was probably the largest customer, they weren't the ONLY customer for these books.

@DocBrown

Fair enough. Technically then, the first Marvel Directs hit the shelves in 1976, with a 1977 cover date.

Every copy I can find seems to have a yellow UPC. I think if yours isnโ€™t yellow then you might have something valuable

I found mine and they indeed have the yellow looking bar codes. My bad, memory.

You're wrong and I'll tell you why...

I'm not buying your argument that:

"The defining characteristic of a newsstand book to a newsstand collector is that the book has a direct edition counterpart"

and neither are you!

Otherwise, you would have titled this thread "Newsstand AND Direct Market is dead"

Boooyyyaaa!

That's true. The defining characteristic of a newsstand book is that it was sold on the newsstand. It, not the Direct market, is the default, since it existed long before the Direct market.

A better way to put it would have been "a newsstand edition during the Direct market era."

@conditionfreak

@shrewbeer is saying that Newsstands and Direct Editions need each other to exist. Therefore, the title of this thread should be "Newsstand AND Direct Market is Dead".

I get it. I don't know how my post got to look like it does. All I posted after all the quotes, was this referring to your post:

lmao @CaptainCanuck you are correct; a collectible "newsstand (newsstand edition)" book cannot exist without a direct edition
