Action Comics #1 - 35g Pure Silver Foil6137

COLLECTOR conditionfreak private msg quote post Address this user
Just wait until they get SS in blood. By Stan Lee even.

Then we will really have a thread to sink our teeth into.

As or right now, it is simple. Don't buy into it if you don't like it.

Next problem please.

I don’t get it. An incomplete “comic” should not be graded as a comic and getting a 10.

They are encapsulating precious metal with a grade that comic book collectors can easily understand. I (and most comic collectors) wouldnt understand at all if it had a coin grade.

Nowhere on the label does it say it’s a comic. Because it’s not.

It’s not a gimmick, it makes sense. .

It’s certainly not a coin and IMO not a comic book. Can’t read it. It may as well be a silver bar. So who knows what it is. I certainly don’t.

No, no, no. New Zealand Mint describes it as a "fine silver collectible" not a comic book. CGC is blurring the lines between comic books and coins thus promoting Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).
CGC states, "CGC will grade these foils according to its industry-standard 10-point grading scale.". They call them "foils", not a comic book. What does CGC stand for again?

I also don't see anywhere in their statement of what they grade, "we also grade "foils". Aren't they violating their own policy?

Comics We Grade

https://www.cgccomics.com/services/comics_we_grade.asp
Comics We Grade
The CGC holder is made of state-of-the-art materials and is designed to meet the needs and demands of comic book collectors. There are some comic books, however, that we cannot encapsulate due to size. We cannot certify any Treasury Sized Comics.

There may be other comic books that we cannot certify. Exclusion of an item from this text does not guarantee certification. Please remember that no floating items can be encapsulated with the comic book (i.e. Certificates of Authenticity, Pedigree COA's, free-floating 3-D glasses, poly-bags). Poly-bagged comics must be taken out of the poly-bag before being graded.

If this isn't a gimmicky money grab, then I don't know what is.

Oh, and there's this,
"The grading fee for this foil is $25. Submitters of 25 or more foils at the same time pay a grading fee of only $20 each. Due to the special nature of this label, Collectors Society and Authorized Dealer discounts are not available."

Don't they grade concert posters? What's the difference? It is gimicky, but you can't fault a business for trying to make money. Unless you use stolen blood....that's a bit extreme.

CGC marketing hit the trifecta with this one.

It's a gimmick (earworm), inside a gimmick(silver cover replica), wrapped in another gimmick (10.0 graded CGC slab).

Dilly dilly!

(not a fanboy, except when it comes to cleverness)

Heh... I missed the phone number as well good catch.

There is WAY WAY WAY too much fanboyism in this thread. CGC is a corporation looking to make money. CBCS is owned by a large corporation now, who of course is looking to make money. Sometimes they do gimmick crap to do it... one buys or doesn't buy. Both have business practices not in the best interests of the fans (exclusives with Artists, Exclusives with con promoters) but have been around in the collectibles industry for years (rampant in sports card collecting especially).

But at the core, both companies provide a service that fans demand. Fans can choose which company's practices bug them the least (or like me, not really care and just use the one that is either cheaper or more convenient) and go there. Really that easy. I can understand having a preferred vendor with anything (or in the case cell phones, the vendor that sucks the least)... but the fanboyism for companies... never will understand it.

@Drbearsec the whole comic book industry is the same thing you are talking about with grading. DC and Marvel, and past and present comic publishing companies, are companies! But there are fan-boys for each of the companies.

To be honest the fan-boyism for Marvel, DC et all is different than for a service company like CGC or CBCS - comic publishers are selling the characters and fantasy world, which is what fan-boyism is all about - getting lost in those characters and worlds. Not sure what world fan-boys are in with CGC and CBCS . . .

@quabrot - Without a doubt. I find fanboyism just ridiculously stupid. I mean, I may prefer Apple to Windows for example or X-Box to PlayStation, but I'm not going to get aggitated or tie my own personal validation to someone agreeing with me on this. Same with Comics. I like Marvel and I like DC. Wolverine and Batman are two of my all time favorite characters. I prefer MCU movies but did enjoy Wonder Woman. Further, I like Image, Aftershock, Dynamite, etc. I love Manga. I don't have a preference on grading companies, to be honest... I think both do a fine job and when I buy a slab, I'm usually not looking at the grading company label but rather how the book looks. I get brand loyalty, I don't get the anger over something banal, with zero effect on anyone's life (unless employees of said companies).

@Drbearsec what? A rational, thinking person who collects comics? I'm shocked!
Agreed. But then people do a lot of side-taking and rooting for the home team (made up of paid players from other towns) and generally figuring out ways to feel superior for things that really have nothing to do with their own being . . . But I fear we are getting too philosophical.

The only silver I buy is pre-1964 silver dimes, and half dollars. Everything else is fluff or other metals melted into them. I've seen silver bars with a nickel center core. You cannot trust anyone.

For anyone that is thinking of buying this as an investment because it's silver... don't . Silver (any metal really) is a terrible investment right now (unless you bought just before the great recession). Price of silver will continue to correct down to pre-recession levels as long as the American economy stays strong.

Metals are a great pre-recession buy. Who knows when the next one will come though

Actually, right now is the time to buy silver since it is so low, at $16/oz. When I was buying silver in 2010, it was double that. Then it dropped in the last 8 years. ffs

Yep, silver topped around 45$ when the economy was crap. It just keeps tumbling. Pre recession it could be had under $10. I bought at $18 and sold at $16. Shoulda bailed at $45. Yay for losing money
