Anyone know what Arthur Suydam charges for signatures or sketches at a con?
His website hasn't been updated in quite a while.

if you buy a print he signs as many books as you like, but you need to buy a print.
sketching I dont know, never asked. didnt like the attitude he and his wife/handler had. could have been that day. dunno.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user

Just read some of those stories. That's just odd.

Darryl from Walking Dead. I wanted an Avenger done as a zombie.
Anyway you can get the same deal I got $200 plus shipping (He actually made me buy a poster of a Norman Rockwell knockoff too just to sign some Alien comics.) I'd throw that in the deal if your interested.

Thanks but I'm not the one interested. A few of us are going to a con he is at and a friend is looking to get some of his books signed and maybe get a sketch.

@VaComicsGuy At New Jersey Comic Expo this past November he charged me $250 for a sketch (photo below). Signatures he won't do unless you purchase a print (which are usually $10) or commissioned a sketch. So once you purchase a print, or commission a sketch; he'll sign whatever you want.

I have seen this happen, crappy way to act.

Also, as a few posters have already referenced, be prepared to deal with this guy's arrogance. He acts as if his crap don't stink. And his manager Renee Witterstaetter is worse. Personally this was my first and last sketch I will ever get from him. In my opinion, he charges too much; and the quality of the art isn't as great as other artists I have gotten sketches from.

When I stopped at his booth this past year during Long Beach Con. I walked up and had the first run of Marvel Zombies signed for the cost of a print. He Was very pleasant and we spoke for a good bit about his work and future projects. Seemed nice enough to me during this visit.

Honestly - are you not better off having to buy a print for $10 and get your books signed for free than paying the amount others are asking for to sign books?

So, it seems like if you buy a print of his for ten bucks .. that he will charge $0.00 for CGC SS or CBCS AW gold labels.

Seems pretty cut and dry to me.

Just buy a print from him for $10, and you get his signature on a stack of gold label books for free.*

Not accounting for SS/AW witness and the $5 or $10 (or thereabouts) charged by CBCS and CGC, for gold labels.

Its honestly a better deal than say Snyder or Capullo for example who charge $15 per signature and you get nothing but a signature. At least Suydam will sign multiples for the cost of a single print.

Now if I were his handler, I think I'd try a new approach just to see how it goes. Tell everyone signatures are a flat $10 for up to 10 books *AND* you get a free print. Same outcome but it seems people would rather pay for the signature and get something else for free than the other way around.

Just talked with a friend that is a fan of Suydams and he said that Suydam can be hit or miss. Sometimes he is friendly & polite and other times he is a total jerkoff. I'm not a big sig collector. In fact, with the exception of Adam West, every sig I have in my collection is from when I was hanging out with friends while they waited to get their books signed. I've never paid for a sig but $10 is reasonable enough especially if he signs multiple books for that.

@BrianGreensnips thanks Brian - pleased my favorite cover - second printing of #1 came back as 9.8. It was a cool story and I picked up the others as well, but not the same - a bit played out. I even stopped picking up Walking Dead a few issues back.

The story is blurry in my head beacause I read it a long time ago. I just remember the Silver Surfer parts and they were amazing. I think I should pick up the trade. I sold some of them so I cannot read the whole thing now. I had a chance to get something from Suydam at MotorCity Con a few years back. He seemed a little stand offish to me. There was just a ton of talent there that year and he did not make the cut that day. But I did enjoy seeing what he brought and do like his work.

From a money msking perspective, Suydam is actually short changing himself.

With the purchase of a $10 print, Suydam is effectively giving his signature away on gold label book signings, without making a nickel past the sale of a $10 print.

Which he shouldn't be making a single red cent off of them. If he wants to make money on yellow label books, he should buy them himself, sign them, then send them in to be graded then sell them at his booth. This is a hot issue for me personally because I don't feel it's the artist's or writer's business what I do with a book I own. They got paid by the publisher for the work they put into the book and their contracted obligations end there.

Signing a book and doing meet and greets in itself can be considered "work". I got annoyed by the "buy a print thing" cause I just forked over a couple hundred for a sketch. But I figured this guy's finished work is probably awesome since his covers are. If you look at the two posted sketches they look extremely similar and almost like background characters. There isn't any action to their poses. Plus I suggested he draw an Avenger. Hands down worst money for value ever spent on comics... and I collect GI Joe!

Reading that back I'd go for an OBO on the above posted comic

Got this piece in 2012 I think for $250. He was pleasant, signed some books and a print. Not my favorite piece I’ve ever purchased. Notice anything missing?
