From a money msking perspective, Suydam is actually short changing himself.

With the purchase of a $10 print, Suydam is effectively giving his signature away on gold label book signings, without making a nickel past the sale of a $10 print.

Which he shouldn't be making a single red cent off of them. If he wants to make money on yellow label books, he should buy them himself, sign them, then send them in to be graded then sell them at his booth. This is a hot issue for me personally because I don't feel it's the artist's or writer's business what I do with a book I own. They got paid by the publisher for the work they put into the book and their contracted obligations end there.

Signing a book and doing meet and greets in itself can be considered "work". I got annoyed by the "buy a print thing" cause I just forked over a couple hundred for a sketch. But I figured this guy's finished work is probably awesome since his covers are. If you look at the two posted sketches they look extremely similar and almost like background characters. There isn't any action to their poses. Plus I suggested he draw an Avenger. Hands down worst money for value ever spent on comics... and I collect GI Joe!

Reading that back I'd go for an OBO on the above posted comic

Got this piece in 2012 I think for $250. He was pleasant, signed some books and a print. Not my favorite piece I’ve ever purchased. Notice anything missing?

Populsr artists and wtiters ....at least half of them...The majority of them charge for signatures on books that are witnessed by CGC S'S and/or CBCS AW gold labels.

J. Scott Campbell, Adam Hughes, Rob Liefeld...off the top of my head, all charge for their signatures on books that are witnessed i.e.gold labels

Leifeld even charges a premium signature fee on New Mutants 87 and 98.

Glenn Fabry doesn't charge a nickel for signatures on gold labels.

He's in the minority.

I had Fabry sign and head sketch a Preacher 1 ,a couple years back.It was witnessed by CGC at Wizard Philly, for a SS label.

He didn't charge me, I gave him $40 regardless, because his signature and head sketch (which took less than 15 seconds altogether) added value to the book. And I like the guy.

@Jeremy_K Ain't that the truth brother. When I met him at New Jersey Comic Expo this past November, I'll admit I didn't know much about him other than he did that one walking dead variant. (I'm a huge Walking Dead fan). So due to the fact that none of the real walking dead artists were attending this show (Charlie Adlard, Tony Moore, Cliff Rathburn, Stefano Guadiano, and Dave Stewart), I thought it'd be cool to get a walking dead zombie Rick Grimes sketch; and the variant cover issue signed by him, cause he "worked" on a walking dead variant issue. (Sketch posted on this thread previously). Unfortunately other than this I really didn't know much more about him cause admitenly I'm just getting back into comics from when I was a little kid. And for the $250 (which I thought was a little rediculous if you ask me. I mean he's not that big of a caliber artist like Mike Zeke or Tony Moore to demand anywhere near that.) I paid him for the sketch; and I'm quite disappointed with it's quality. I got two other sketches done that day by other artists attending the show, and the quality/price was so much better than what Suydam produced/charged. Here is a sketch I got Scott Koblish (current deadpool artist) to do for me at the show. He only charged me for this fully rendered wraparound sketch $160.

The final sketch I got that day was from Will Torres. He only charged me a reduced price of $120 for a wraparound sketch, because he liked my original sketch idea; and said "nobody has ever asked for this before. That's a great idea!" Walking Dead supper fan = a zombie Negan attacking Rick Grimes sketch. 😂

You guys judge for yourselves who did the better sketch. In my opinion Scott Koblish and Will Torres blew Arthur Suydam out of the water!

Agreed, $250 for a sketched book....is kinda excessive. He is not as big a name as Mike Zero but he is a he'll of a good artist.

His Marvel zombies covers are 😍😍

Well, I hope that walking dead sketched book was at least for a CBCS or CGC gold label.

@CopperAgeKids True from what I've seen that @Stu posted on this thread of his Suydam cover books, they look great. Just like the walking dead variant he did.

However with that being said, if the quality of his work on covers/variants had a direct correlation to the quality of work he does on sketches; then I'd be more than happy with his work. But unfortunately he strikes me as one of these artists who believes his shit don't stink; and therefore doesn't put in any effort into the quality of his sketches. The sad part is that there seems to be a decent sized group of comics artists out there that pocess the same arrogant mind set when it comes to the fans (the people that pretty much made them sort of speak). But thankfully it's not all of them. For instance Scott Koblish at NJCE talked to me about the future of the Deadpool story ark to come, giving out insider information before the future issues had dropped (even though he probably could have gotten in trouble for distributing this info without Marvel's approval); and even pulled out the last original art page that he completed for a future issue to show us/hold (that was going to be released in four months), which he was going to send into Marvel when he got back from the show. Charlie Adlard was like this as well, when I randomly walked into a comic shop in the UK and he was there signing/sketching. Got this bad boy, that's in the middle, from him.

And it's not only artists that are more perceptive of the fans. This past October at New York Comic Con, me and my friends got to meet Fabian Nicieza. Fabian made a comment that "boy I'm thirsty. I wish I had a beer!" So me and my friends walked to the cafe and pretty much ordered a 12 pack of pints, and delivered them to him. For the next half hour he allowed us to sit at his table with him while we split the beers, and talked to us in great lengths about his time on creating deadpool/marvel in the 80's & 90's; all while continuing to sign comics of other fans.

Those are the types of artists/writers that are in touch with their fan base. Arthur Suydam, in my opinion, isn't and it's reflected in his sketches.

@CopperAgeKids and yes I got that Suydam sketch CBCS yellow label art slabbed. I get all my sketches yellow label art slabbed right after the artist completes them. The only time I don't is when CBCS isn't at the show I'm attending, and unfortunately I have to settle for a red label art slab. I don't submit my sketches to CGC cause to me, when I'm getting a sketch, the only thing I care about is the art work; and not a grade. And I think that if a sketch was to be graded, and came back below say a 9.8, it distracts people away from the art; because it's not a 9.8. Especially if you're trying to sell it or show off the book to your comic buddies. Just my opinion.
