Fun Times at Garden State Comic Fest6034

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
I went to the Garden State Comic Fest on Sunday. I guess they've been running it in north Jersey for at least a little one, but had their first in Atlantic City this year.

I liked it overall. I would say it was around 70% comics/artists, 20% cosplay, and 10% celebrities. There were a few semi-famous people there and set up in their own corner, and a fair number of cosplayers who also had tables in their own area, but the vast majority of the floor was vendors and artists. It was a good balance from my point of view.

CBCS was there, although I forgot to get the names of who I talked to! A very helpful and friendly intern witnessed a Steranko signature for me and I submitted that along with a few other books. Later in the day I got a Ms. Marvel 1 and Uncanny 50 that both look to be in good shape. The guy even threw in a free Wonder Woman for my daughter, which was super nice of him.

It was a good time, and I hope they come down this way again next year.

Cool! I gave five copies of his Batman Dawnbreaker foil variant to CBCS for signing and grading before I left on Saturday.

i wish i can say the same about dallas fan suckpos. about 80% celebs and 5% decent people (this is what they get for having it the same days as C2E2). and as usual, over-promised and never delivered, terrible management with the attitude "hurry the freak up and wait. and while you're in line, make sure you are not sitting down on the ground and that you can feel the guy behind you breathing down your neck" . and remember folks, if any writers/artists want to charge more than $25 because its graded, just tell them that John Romita SR charges only $20. and ask them if they know who he is.

Steranko charged $30. People can charge what they want as far as I'm concerned, then you just have to decide if you want to pay that. I only wanted one book signed and just from him, so I didn't mind.

People can charge whatever they want, but charging a different price for the same service, depending on wholly irrelevant (to the creator) factors like where the item ends up, is chintzy, greedy, and foolish.

The signature takes the same effort, whether you slab the book, keep it raw, bury it, burn it, eat it, or use it for toilet paper. It's none of the creators' business what you do with your property, and the fact that they even ask is out of bounds. Want to charge $10,000 for your sig? More power to you, God bless you...but charge the same price to everyone. Don't charge me a surcharge because you don't like what you THINK I might do with it after you sign it. It's none of your business what I do with my property.

Enough with the CBCS punishment tax already.

Yeah, there are lots of people I wouldn't pay anything for a signature. But I'm not that big on signatures. On the other hand, if my signature was worth money I would definitely charge for it.

I've been into signatures since before I even got into comics. I was always shocked that you could get books signed by creators at conventions and they didn't charge for it. Comic collectors have been spoiled for a long time by that. Any other hobby where there's signatures involved, there's a price attached to them.

There are still plenty of creators that don't charge or if they do it's a small fee. Even then it's sometimes donated to charity. I know Dan Jurgens takes donations for Hero Initiative, Mike Royer donates what he collect to cancer research.

As far as charging more for books that are being submitted... that's not something that affects me being that since I work for CBCS I can't submit books for grading. I can't say I'm crazy about the practice of the surcharge for grading but it's not going away, if anything it'll likely become more commonplace as time goes by.

technically it's usually CGC witness because CBCS isn't nearly as popular....a loop hole...the president uses it all the time when paying taxes

Not if the consumers of these signatures make an issue out of it.

And they should.

I'm thrilled to support creators and whatever they want to charge. If it works for me, great. The charge isn't the issue. The discriminatory charge is.

As far as CBCS is concerned, it HURTS the company, because fewer books are submitted than otherwise would be...not might be, would be. I have hundreds, if not thousands, of books I would submit for grading if the creators...like Marv Wolfman...didn't charge a punishment tax because they think someone is "profiting off their signature."

These creators clearly have no idea what they're talking about, and many (including Wolfman and the late, great Len Wein, Bob Layton, among others) have a completely inaccurate picture of what slabbing is all about. Who do they think these slabs ultimately go to? Collectors, obviously.

And, of course, the persistently dishonest have tried to make the claim that "oh, you sell these, so it's just about the bottom line for you." That's a lie, with a smidgen of truth to make it palatable. Of course I sell them. Of course I care about the bottom line. If a creator wants to charge $10,000 for their sig, they should. It's their right. If Stan's sig is worth the $140 his daughter is now charging, then I will make that decision. But Stan doesn't charge a different fee for slabbers vs. non-slabbers, and that's the crux of the issue.

If no one says anything, if no one stands up to this practice, yes, of course, it will become more commonplace. But the commonplace status of a bad commercial practice doesn't make it not bad.

PS. As far as comic collectors being spoiled, there's a significant difference between Marv Wolfman signing a book...someone nobody knows outside of comics, and whose signature has very little value...to, say, LeBron James, or Steph Curry, or Tom Cruise, or Jennifer Lawrence, all of whom are, functionally, household names.

@DocBrown Debating the added fee from creators for books being slabbed would possibly just cause some of those creators to up their price to the higher amount. Again, I don't necessarily like it but it is what it is.

Celebrity sigs are one thing, think along the line of author signatures though. In the majority of signings I've attended at book stores they require the purchase of a copy of the writer's newest release (usually from that specific store) in order for you to get anything signed. Sometimes that's the only thing they'll sign at the event.
