Batman Adventures 12 In the Wild5976

Collector thelastbard private msg quote post Address this user
So, my wife stumbled on a listing for some 90's comics online yesterday locally, so when I got off work, we trekked to this guys house about 50 miles from our place... They were supposed to all be NM/M, but that wasn't the case. The "gem" of the bunch was Batman Adventures 12, but the condition? A little rough!

@SteveRicketts you may have your work cut out for you? What do you think?

Ouch, that looks rough. Cool find, though, hope you got a nice price.

newstand version...toss it on the bay at $1 and let it ride.

@dpiercy I should have talked him down from the price we had agreed on... the other books were totally worthless, so I basically paid for this.

Hmmm.... I guess the question is, given the condition... press and slab or press and just have CBCS slap a grade on it? Not a HUGE price difference between the two, and I'm not planning to keep it.

Before press, it appears to be a 4.5-5.0. After press probably around the same grade still or maybe a 6.0. Book appears to have gotten wet or too much humidity or both. It's a good "survivor" copy.

@kaptainmyke I don't know what the heck got on the top right around that tiny tear / puncture ... It goes through to the back cover and caused the pages to stick together. All of them came apart, but I'm terrified to pull apart where the last page sticks to the back cover. I think I'd rather leave that to the professionals when they clean/press.

I've seen grape/cherry koolaid and lemonade cause a similar issue with pages.

@kaptainmyke You can stick your tongue on it and taste... I'm not going to! Lemonade would make sense, though.

There's a hole on the front cover; this book would be lucky to get a 3.0 with a press. I say send it in w/out a press and hope for a .5. The novelty of having a .5 BA12 news stand is cool!

4.5-5.0 with a press.

When grading a lower grade comic I start at :

"Very Good. The average used comic" (Overstreet).

And think to myself "is this an average used comic?".
I would say that it is worse than average and assign it a grade of 3.5.

So I am puzzled as to how anyone could grade it 4.5 to 5.0 (no offense meant @kaptainmyke ) we all have differing opinions as to what constitutes "average used" I'm just wondering if I have set my baseline too high?

Love the divisive discussion here... We have between a 0.5 and a 6.0! Let's press it to a 9.8! Wait...

I think this would be lucky to press to a 5.0, personally, but I could be wrong. This is going to be more of a clean-up just for presentation, which is fine, but I could be wrong! The three things working against it are color breaks near the spine on the cover, the hole, and whatever happened above the cover through the back cover (stain/soak).

How that translates on the grade AFTER a press, I don't know... Maybe the after will be a 4.5.

4.5 Is the best safest bet. I tried to be optimistic.

After pressing the best you can hope for is a 4.5.

Beater copper keys always sell well in lower grades via BIN.

This book isn't super hot right now though.

And it really needs a press to sell for decent coin.

With the water damaged area and heavy wear, it is pretty much a 2.5.

What I would do is post it up as a $149.99 BIN + $10 for priority usps domestic.

Offer international air 1st class uses at a weight of 1 pound 9 ounces.

Ship bagged &boarded in a Gemini, slide the bagged and boarded book inside a top loader.

I would just press it myself and put it at $199 + shipping.

I sold a vg+ and a vg/fn raw copy of NM 98 to two buyers, both in New Zealand, when Deadpool 1 came out a couple years back at $199 + shipping, which was like $20.😍😍😍

Foreign buyers pay more than u.s.buyers, for these sorts of books.

@CopperAgeKids I've never even attempted a self-press. I used a local place once, and now have a couple of books with Steve to play with.

But.... you're recommending press and sell raw, though, huh?

I think you paid too much. Even if it was just one dollar. Because you drove a hundred miles.

Hope you stopped for ice cream along the way.

I believe it is called a "pig in a poke" when you buy something you have not seen.

I'd be surprised if this got higher than 3.5- I think it's a 3.0
The color breaks are beyond "Moderate".
CGC is less forgiving when it comes to newer books (meaning post 90's). I don't know how CBCS is, but I'd imagine similar considering who started this place.

I won't say it's a waste of money. You spent the day comic hunting with your wife (definitely envy you there), but was there anything else interesting in the lot?

Nyet, comrade.

I am saying that's what I would do.

But if you have a local presser, and he knows what he is doing, than have him press it.

It will bring virtually the same price if it is pressed and sold raw via BIN....as it would if pressed and slabbed by CBCS or CGC.

After it is pressed, scan the front/back covers....make the main image a pic of the book bagged & double boarded in a bag and board, sleeved in a top loader with a piece of scotch tape 1.5" away from the top right corner of the top loader....that will prevent the book from shifting in the top loader while in transit, with any stress distributed towards the opposite side of the spine so no damage to the spine via stress or worst case, staple detachment, is prevented.

Getting good money for raws is all in presentation.

I got like $180 via auction for a raw but CGC / CBCS GUARANTEED UNIVERSAL 9.8 copy of totally awesome hulk 22 last year.

To be clear, just using that as a reference point...NOT saying you should guarantee any grade on this book by CGC or CBCS.

Bleeding Cool mentioned that sale in an article, you can probably find the listing via ebay archives somehow...With the pics and scans, presentation I laid out.

@conditionfreak @MR_SigS Well, it wasn't the whole day... Got off work at three, left home around 4, back home around 7:30, and we stopped for dinner, too, PLUS we took a bit of an off the beaten path way to avoid commuter traffic. Not too bad, really.

Was a dollar too much? Naaaahhhhh.... The pictures he posted just didn't represent the ACTUAL condition, and he said NM/M. I didn't trust that they were perfect, but I couldn't guess just how bad they'd be. I wouldn't have assumed this, which was by far the worst condition of all of the books.

Also, nothing else redeeming in all of the books... Dollar bin at best.

With Batman Adventures, I may be able to find a good home for it. Think of it this way - it was kind of a comic rescue.
