Hanging graded comics up on wall?589

I've heard that prolong displaying slabbed comics on wall over time can damage the point potentially. Is this true or just speculation

You don't want sunlight to be able to hit it.

UV will damage the colours.

Walk past a convenience store and see all the flyers in the window and how the colours look drained. Depending on what you want to display I would get a nice high res scan and print it out and frame that.

Ok how about not in direct sunlight. I just heard from so collectors that the weight of the cover can actually pull down on staples over time. Didn't know if this was true

That might be a problem with the new CGC slabs that are held together with pressure, but don't think it's an issue with any of the others.

99.9% of comics are stored standing up (in a long box/short box, on a comic rack etc). Your fine from that aspect. Environment (humidity/temp changes) are much more damaging than standing up.

Exposure to sunlight and the temp and humidity of the room are the big concerns, otherwise wall hanging should not cause damage.

Any light will cause damage. It may not be very much and in the case of indirect light, it may take a long time to become apparent, but it will happen.
Cool, dry, dark is the best

Better to make high quality scans of covers, print them out and frame them

Just use UV protectors with the wall mounts. That's what I do.

Most (all?) people store their comics upright in a box, so hanging them on a wall won't be any worse that standing upright in box, especially for slabbed books.

However, light is the devil, and if your books are up on a wall, you're going to get at least some indirect sunlight unless your room is blacked out. The devil will slowly fade the colors of your books.

Does anyone have a preferred mount to use?

Gweedo makes some comic display frames with UV glass. I have two that I love. You just slide books in the top.

I make mine. frames aren't that complicated to make. then go to a local frame shop and buy some uv glass.

http://www.comicmount.com/ have some great inexpensive adjustable wall/shelf mounts. Just buy a window UV protection role $25 for 6.5ft x 30in and cut to fit (enough for 20 displays). Slide UV in front of comic and you will have UV protection. I think they look better than box frame types.

I bought something identical at a convention but it came with a really nice colored protective frame. It's called Slab-Pro.

I've seen those Slab-Pro. They look horrible to me.

Checked out the sight from Comic Mounts. Looks clean and simple. I also like the idea of the roll of UV you mentioned Kanaloa. Thought the UV roll would be more expensive. Might be ideal for putting over my framed original art and convention scetches that I have. I have an ASM #24 signed by Stan Lee framed in one of those Slab Pro holders and payed extra for the UV material to put over. Except it is a bit bubbly and was real hard to smooth out. Any issues with the rolled material?

I use windex while putting the UV protection on. That way you can adjust easy and press out the small bubbles before it starts to stick as windex dries. To take off just windex again and the UV protector slides off again in order to remove or adjust. That's how they do it on windows. It's much harder to install on windows than a 12 inch case. There are many videos online showing how its done for windows.

You could also just put it on your windows to protect the whole room. There are also ones that have more protection than just for UV but more expensive. Many hot areas or south facing use them to drastically reduce air conditioning costs. I use a type on my windows that have ceramic in the sheets to reduce heat in my rooms. Very durable but custom installed and much more expensive.

I just use J-channel and slide 'em in ... I don't have curtains up in the room yet, but I will put up some blackout curtains just to help with any sunlight.

I really don't think there is all that much to worry about as long as the sun isn't glaring directly on to the comic

I would not have thought of windex. Thanks.

Comic Mount is made from a really flimsy plastic. I would NOT put anything valuable in one of those.

@Kanaloa Actually they are kinda cool and you can match the color to the book. I've wall mounted several now with uv covers.

Mine have gone through a 7.2 earthquake without breaking or falling off wall. There's no way they could just break hanging there. It's possible they could fall, but that can be said about anything hanging.

That's cool KrellEducator. Those just look like bumpers on a bumper-car to me.

You could go the Homedepot route. That wouldn't look very good in my house though. But it works

I use and also recommend Comic Mount. Don't find them flimsy at all. Never had a issue.

The J-Channel is cool as well...

Personally, I just display them, usually in a place without direct sunlight, but I think it is a bit much to hide them away in boxes and print photo copies on the wall. If I were to hang photo copies I may as well just print off google and not buy the book. You are the only one who truly cares about your comics, so display them and look at them. Life is too short. Sure if you keep your books in hiding for years they will stay pristine, but who cares? We'll be old and not able to enjoy them as much and I doubt the kids would care as much as you did. ENJOY THEM WHILE YOU CAN!

Just my opinion, and I respect others decisions.

Over time gravity will take over if a book is stored standing up. This is usually OK, but depending on the type of inner well and amount of overhang a book may have damage can and has occurred.
