Grading Hit from this corner defect ?5630

Hi All,
Im one of the fortunate that in 1997 when going to my LCS to pick up my monthly set of subscriptions (which included a lot of Spawn) , I asked about this rare incentive version of Spawn B&W I read about (probably in Wizard guide) and after the guys had a chat in the back room, they handed it over for cover price.

Ive held onto it tightly since, but its always had this one darn defect on the cover. I'm thinking about sending it into grading but I'm just not sure if i should as i see raw books selling for the same as a 9.4 and im just not sure if my book has a chance of scoring higher.

It has a colour breaking mark/dent on the lower left of the front cover (it doesnt go to the back).. The rest of the comic is in great condition as far as I can tell (though Ill allow you to be the judge).

Anyone willing to look at these pics and offer opinion? ( I used flash and chose the worst angles to make it look as harsh as possible).

Thanks !

I have a spawn thank you edition with a similar fate. I'd give it a 9.6.

worth a shot to send it in...or if you want, get it signed and then graded for the added bump in asking price. nice book and congrats for holding onto it.

How is the rest of the spine when looking directly at it? Is there "feathering" where basically there is color breaks where the front and back cover "meet" running vertically? These types of defects usually are ver noticeable on black covers....if so, I'd knock it down to a 9.4, even 9.2 if the break runs the entire length.

It's one of those defects that can show up even when you put it in a bag with a strong board and let it be. Always fighting this defect from appearing, especially with thicker stock/glossy covers.

thanks.. appreciate the feedback

if i put it under harsh flashlight, can notice small white line up spine, which dont see in normal light.

ive noticed a similar effect on the same corner on a few other spawn b&w raw copies ive seen on ebay so like you say it may well be a not uncommon symptom for the thick black glossy cover.

iva attached a couple more pictures with ruler against it if that helps with your opinion (with and without flash.)

thoughts ?

Hope for a 9.6 but prepare for a 9.4/9.2

Whenever submitting a black book like this, I subtract almost as much a half to whole grade depending on the book and usually I get pretty close +/- if not spot on.

Best of luck to ya!

Thanks all.. Il make my decisions based on it being a 9.2 and if it gets better than that than it will be a bonus.

Does anyone have opinion on whether this particular book will hold value? I'm debating whether to sell it raw and replace with other comics or slab it for protection and hold onto it for my son when he gets older.

that particular variant is 97% trending upwards in the past 24 months in 9.2 grade so I'd get it pressed and graded if not anything for preservation. Just about any other grade it is trending upwards at least 10-12%

Thanks.. Im a bit worried that corner would flake further with a press, but I imagine the guys here at cbcs know how to deal with it.

was just browsing a couple of SS series of this issue to see what 9.2 SS might get.

im not sure if im allowed to post links or images to issues on ebay so ive refrained - but ive seen a number of 9.8 SS (not CBCS) with the same corner defect. actually, there is one posted that has the same defect top AND bottom edges and still has a 9.8 !

looks like it will be a bit of a lottery going for grade with a submission. anything from 9.2 to 9.8 depending on mood of grader ( and company i guess) ? or does the other company consider it a manufacturing defect ?

From what I’ve seen there is some inconsistency in high grades between the 9.4-8 range. I’ve seen examples with both CBCS and CGC labels which tells me it’s something neither has been able to solidify.

appears so.. Just went to my LCS and they had 4 CGC slabs and 1 CBCS for sale.. All 9.8 .. The CBCS looked flawless to my eyes..

3 of the 4 CGC had very similar colour break on / near the corner as mine ( 1 basically identical) ... 1 of those 3 had the smaller ( but comparable) colour break top and bottom ..

I guess I will run the grading gauntlet with this book

Right, the corner will be fine. I'd definitely have CBCS press the book before it's graded.
