Brian Pulido told me he was going to be at Big Apple on Facebook.

Also, I spoke with Jim Shooter in Rhode Island. It is unlikely that he will be at the show.

With Stan, keep in mind that health is an issue. Last year he was going to do Big Apple and couldn't due to health problems. They flew Jim Lee in at the last minute to make it right.

'Ye of little faith ๐Ÿ˜‰

This is how Carbo runs his show every year, actually.

He doesn't put up his guest or his vendor list until the very last few weeks before the doors open.

Don't get it wrong, though. Carbo's Big Apple Con is always a slammer and he promotes the Hell out of this show.

That is one of the reasons why it is packed every year.๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ

All I can say is that I missed this show last year, and have been looking forward to this year's Big Apple ...since....well, last year's Big Apple.

Edit:

Actually, I can also say that I have gone to Carbo's shows since the late it's til about 2000-20001, when I got out of comics nearly altogether for about 10 years. he held them in the basement of the St. Paul the Apostle Church.

I have been to the NYCC Reed Pop show once, and I was not particularly impressed.

There are no dealers at that Reed Pip show that I have not seen at Carbo's Big Apple.

What Reed Pop's show has that Carbo's Big Apple does not is a hodge podge of vendors pushing everything but comics....and much higher admission prices with over priced con variants that lose about 75 cents on the dollar in market value, if not more, within 1-2 months.

Of course there are variant cover exclusives at Carbo's Big Apple , but they are not artificially inflated and overdone as they are at Reed POP'S con.

Carbo and his crew always run their conventions very smooothly, and they have security guards in place to deter thieves. It is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The Big Apple is also the biggest, non-corporate sponsored comic book focused convention on the east coast.

Unlike Wizard Philly for example, at the Big Apple you will not see multiple blocks of exhibitor booths taken up by Verizon and/or Sprint.

Or aluminum siding companies, for that matter...

Seriously, there were aluminum siding companies exhibiting with booths, at the last Wizard Philly I went to, in 2016. Wizard shows get progressively worse, every time I go to them.๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

With the golden and silver age books that you collect, I think you should attend the Big Apple in April. โ˜บ

I booked my transport last week, Big Apple is one of my favorite shows. I'm kind of glad Steranko is the only one there I want a sig from, I can blow my budget on books. ๐Ÿ˜

Question now is do I go for his sig on another X-Men 50 or see if I can score a nice Nick Fury, I've gotten a taste for yellow labels.

If you're mostly a SA/BA collector, Mike Royer would be a good signature to get witnessed by CBCS or CGC. Royer handled inking on Kirby's pencil layouts, on the majority of Kirby's SA/BA pencil work, IIRC.

I have never seen Royer at a convention, Stefano appears fairly regularly at conventions, OTOH.At least in the north east area.

A Royer signature and possibly a sketch as well, on a book like New Gods #1 and/or #7...Jimmy Olson 134...Forever People #1 and so on....or just a Kirby/Royer run book in high grade....would be what I'd suggest, his signature is much tougher/rarer than Steranko's.

Both CBCS,and CGC,will have booths at the Big Apple, as well
.

What would be really killer, far as rarity, would be a CBCS Verified Kirby signature, with a Royer CBCS Authorized Witness "gold trim" sort of label...like CGC Qualified green labels with unverified sign on them, but gold trim if a second artist/writer/actor sign the book in the presence of a CGC authorized witness/employee or a CGC SS facilitator.

Either way, that'd be pretty damn sweet. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’“

But if Steranko is your main man, I think a Steranko sig (maybe a head sketch/remark too) on a Spyman...would be what I'd go after. It was a 3 issue run and IIRC, contained Steranko's first published/professional work.

Tough call though....Steranko drew so many good covers.

Cap 113 and the trippier Dali-esque Nick Fury come to mind, among many others.

P.S.

I was mistaken about Royer providing inking to Kirby's pencils on some of those books that I cited, specifically.

Royer's wikipedia page lists all of the books he was worked on, though.

I was right about pretty much everything else,WRT him inking the majority of Kirby's bronze and some later silver age books.

Unless you want a sketch of Mickey Mouse, Tigger, or Goofy on a Fourth World book, bring a Gladstone, Dell, or Gold Key.

Mike doesn't do Super hero sketches because he isn't a super hero artist. He's a Cartoonist, and an Inker. The reason Kirby preferred Mike, besides being able to ink AND letter the 3 pages Kirby handed him each day, was because Mike was not an embellisher, and what Mike inked is what Kirby drew, just cleaner.

Mike has always been amused by his haters who say he "ruins Kirby", when what they're hating is as close to Kirby as they'll ever get, unless Kirby inked it.

Anyway, Mike doesn't do super hero sketches. I've seen him do dozens of Disney head sketches on cocktail napkins for waitresses and Flight Attendants, so that won't be a problem

I'm just trying to save everyone, including and especially Mike, from an awkward moment at the show.

But please stop by for the sigs! He LOVES his fans, especially fans of his Disney work, and will talk your ear off if you let him (and since he's holding the pen, even if you don't lol). He asks a minimum of $2 for each sig, 100% goes to Cancer research because both he and his wife are survivors.

Have fun, everyone!!

I also suggest bringing:

2001: ASO #8

Machine Man #1

Star Wars #6 (the original series)

The Eternals #15

An interesting choice could be (and I'll have to confirm with him tomorrow which issue) Marvel Treasury Edition #4 or #15- The Conan issues. In one of them he ghost inked a page for BWS. I'll ask, also because I think it's time I got one.
He challenged me to find the page. I did I think he was actually kinda let down lol

Anything from Warren Publication (Vampirella 1, 2, 4-6, Creepy 29, 30, 32, 37, Eerie 23-25, 27, 32)
Can't go wrong with classic Magnus Robot Fighter (GK) 12-14, 22, 25, 27, 28

WBN #18- Just kidding. He hated this comic! He said the pencils from Don Perlin were about as rough as can be.

Heck, if you have any old Banana Splits TV show stuff, he was one of the set designers. If you have the 1960's Spider-Man series on VHS (google it) or dvd, he will have a great story for you about how he laid out much of the first season art (uncredited), and how he was almost the voice of Peter Parker.

And really, if you have any Disney, Hanna-Barbera, or GK/Dell, you'll make his day

@50

Whoa.

I did specifically say "possibly" before the comment about any sketch by Royer because I have never met Royer and don't know how he operates WRT sketching/remarking books for gold labels.

I also followed up my previous comment and corrected myself on 3 books that I had specifically noted.

His Wikipedia page, that I linked earlier, says everything else you would need to know about which books he worked on.

He is also denoted as a "penciler", FWIW.

@Mr.Sigs

I don't know why he wouldn't throw a head sketch of a character he inked for a Kirby book but if you say so, I believe you.

A lot of artists...Tom Mandrake for example, will throw head sketches on a single book, for free.

As long as it is only a single book or 2. It varies on/by the creator. He signed a Batman 386,387 for me a couple years back. No charge, asked him to throw a quick head sketch of either Batman or Black Mask on #387, simply because the windowed area I cut out for #386 was too small...and he happily oblidged.

I gave him $10, despite him not charging me for sigs on the 2 books and a head sketch on the #387, because I believe an artist should be compensated for their work, whether or not they ask to be paid. The #386 is the book that would have actually made more sense to get a head sketch on, as it's the 1st Black Mask....that is why I don't chase down artists or writers when I am set up at shows anymore, I end up losing sales at my booth and making mistakes...

Similarly....though I was not a vendor at Wizard Philly 2016 in the following example...I handed Fabry $40, despite him telling me there was no charge for a signing & head sketching of Jesse Custer on a Preacher #1 for a CGC SS slab.

Hats off to Mr.Sigs for the break down on Royer, in any event๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘

As I said, it's not what he does. He's not your typical comic artist that just whips out a practiced head sketch like Neal Adams and others.

He had to let a fan down at SDCC last year, pretty much saying what I described, and it was an awkward moment as he had drawn a crowd in front of the Kirby Museum.

It was MTE #15. Can anyone (who has it) find the page?
He also ghost inked a page for Silver Star #5. If anyone has it, it should be easy to distinguish Mike's page from Thibodeaux's.

I spent the afternoon with Mike going through his cabinets looking for stuff for him to bring. Mostly concept art.
