Help with Grade - Giant Size Defenders5514

Collector hockeymonkey605 private msg quote post Address this user
Looking for a grade estimate on this. I'm really not good with judging spines on these thicker books. Small quarter inch tear at the top that can be seen in one of the pics. It's between the front cover and the fullness of the spine, not through the center. Really just one obvious spine tic on the spine that I see. Also has pretty significant bindery wholes on the front and back covers.

My main uncertainties lie with the damage to the lower edge of the book resulting from the production process. Also, I’m not sure how these thick spines grade out or how the staple indentations in the thick books affect grade.

I'd give it a 7.0-7.5 grade based on the bottom of the book and a few ticks in the spine. Of course I'm not a professional grader.

So you think the gripper holes would hammer the grade?

Yeah especially because they are in the black part of the bottom of the book and make them so prominent.

As unsightly as they are, I think those are considered manufacturing defects.
As is I'd call this 8.0
Could press better, if you're into that.

Even if they don't effect grade, it may effect value.

And just because they are a manufacturing defect, doesn't mean they get a free pass. I have books graded that had nearly imperceptable production creases along the length of a spine...cbcs wacked the grade down at least one notch as it was listed as a defect in the grading notes.

This!

Mainly due to the 1/4" tear on the spine.

You could get a better copy for a lower price than pressing and grading would cost.
