Amazing Spider-Man #1 Help Question..5359

Collector mattness private msg quote post Address this user
I came across an Amazing Spider-man #1 on ebay, 1.8 for $2,999,99. The label looks shorter too me, when I compare it to other CBCS slabs of that type. The inner well looks "funny" to me too. I asked the seller for additional scans of the complete back side of the label and slab, they said they would send them. I just got a message saying that they decided to sell the book at auction starting for $9.99 ??? I'd love to hear from the forum regarding the images. Does everything "gel?" Thanks everyone.

per the label, they spent nothing on tape and it shows. They don't say anything is missing, water damaged or replaced. Would Scotch tape turn color over time? .. 1.8?? .....WHERE?

Go to Heritage auction. Auction #121421. Lot #10032 ASM#1
for a 1.8 comparison. Forget price, concentrate on condition.

Still a Spider-Man 1, 1.8 is a high grade for it, looks more like a 1.0, my bid was 2424

The complete graders notes list all the tears, stains etc. I thought this might be a .5 or 1 but that's why I'm not a professional grader.

Extensive amount of tape on cover, interior cover & pages.
Large piece of back cover reattached with tape.

Notes:
Extensive amount of tape on cover, interior cover & pages.
many edge pieces missing
spine roll, tears, wear, stress & creases
2.5" stain through top spine
large piece reattached with tape back cover

Yes! And not only will scotch tape turn color, it will also deteriorate, and thus the paper it is attached to in that particular area will deteriorate as well.

@mattness - buy a GRR in high grade instead. Then you won’t have to worry if all that tape discolors and damages that book even more over time.

For that matter, there are SO many reprints of ASM #1, you can get anything from the 1960s to now. As long as the reprint has the full cover and story, you could even get one of the hardback editions.
As a simple example,

I'm not sure. I just bought Young Allies #1 graded at a 2.5. I'm looking to get it restored. I have U.S.A. COMICS #1. It was restored and graded by CGC at a 9.0.

I know others in this forum don't like or buy restored comic books but how many of them can say they own a copy of YOUNG ALLIES #1 and or U.S.A. COMICS #1 (restored or not).

@Rafel, how much did you pay for the U.S.A. COMICS#1? Did you buy it before or after it was restored?

The G1 labels were a little smaller for a period of time. This one looks legit. They all had a water mark that can be seen running vertically just to the left of the logo.

If had the opportunity to buy that book....I'd pass it on by and look for at least a 4.0/5.0 for investment reasons.

Granted the book is rare and in a graded form, probably rarer, but I had a #2 that looked way better and I guessed it to be a 2.0-3.0 because it was ripped through the pages but not the cover.

There are better books out there.

Be cautious - "let the buyer beware" is the old adage.

Good luck!

whoda thought golden record reprints would be a great investment? Not me, that's who. Those books have skyrocketed

I like that the seller notes that the book is unrestored. True, but held together entirely with tape. It's a real rag.

I have a Spider-Man 1 already and a golden record reprint. This was just to resale it later, the cheapest graded 1.8 was 2800, then 3400, up from there. I agree I thought at best this should be a 1.0, I see a lot of inconsistencies in the 3td party grading system. Sometimes I wonder if it rewarded for bigger companies that submit a multitude of books

I don't see anything unusual about this book. Looks legit and high bid is extremely low at this point ($214).

For what it is. A very rough copy of a major key and desirable book.

If it doesn't go over 1K, it would be a steal IMO. Even though I have a 5.0 and I HATE tape on comics.

I see coverless go for $800. So a coverless Spider-man 1 is almost my most valuable comic. Never would have thought it.
In the same box of coverless I got for my kids to read back in the 90’s was a Punch 19, a Tomb of Terror 15, and a Fight Against Crime 20. Of course the cover of those is where the value is. But I got repro covers, and my kids dug the stories. And that box got both my kids interested in collecting.

It was already restored and graded. Who did the restoration I don't know and CGC did the grading.

I sold my red label cbcs 1.5 ASM #1 signed by Stan Lee for $4,250 to a Canadian doctor.

I sold my GRR #1 cbcs 8.0* with LP record for $800.

There's money to be made with Amazing Spider-man. It's amazing.
