eBay Selling: Auction vs. Buy It Now5343

I don't believe this....and I know you don't care that I don't believe this. GAC private msg quote post Address this user
If you were going to sell you collection of key issues on eBay would you do it as a Buy It Now or Auction style and why?

Side Note: how do buyers feel about reserves?

Everyone hates reserves.

if you need fast cash now, do an auction.

if you can wait, set them for reasonable prices based on recent ebay sales and they will go for good money over the next few months.

@GAC are you selling graded or raw? That matters for the listing style.

No reserve, but they start their auction at $99, which is in essence a reserve I find irritating. Buy it now is safer and slower, but sometimes auctions go higher than the same graded book at a buy it now from a different seller, which makes it head scratching. Or your auctions might go too low. I do buy it nows

I mostly do BIN with BO because I know the value of what I am selling. If you need some money quick it is best to do auctions as buyers are more inclined to purchase something with a low opening bid instead of purchasing something for FMV as a BIN.

Great insight guys! Thanks!

I'm considering selling my collection.....haven't decided one way or the other but mulling it over.

I can put up an older list of my books. I've never sold my older books...just new stuff so this list is definitely not up to date.

@KingNampa I have both raw and graded but mostly raw books

I don't have to sell just thinking maybe its time to liquidate and put the money in an RRSP for my boy.

Selling takes time, unless you can take less as an entire collection sale. When I retire I plan to sell $1-2000 per month, steadily. That is why I collected the keys.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user
Buy it now is the best way to sell if you have the patience to wait for the money. You will end up with more money for your books in the long run.

@GAC if raw I would sell 99 cent no reserve auction. Unless it’s a key then just set your BIN and wait.

it's a bad time of year to auction off books. especially cbcs labels. sale prices are way lower this time of year.

I tried to do some auctions in March last year and it was a disaster. Auction buyers are far less serious than buy it now buyers. In addition to cancelled bids I had several winners not pay. With buy it now they almost always pay.

Hell no.

If you're going to run auctions, as a seller without name recognition, you will take it up the are on raw books sold at .99 cent auctions.

Sellers like Comics4Less do well with raw books in auction format, they have steady customers and are known for cheap shipping and tight grading.

The only thing to sell in auction format is mixed lots of reader bronze and copper. If you have beater silver, make silver only lots.

$1 books, IOW.

Ship economy (medi) for free....if your pics look good, you can average $35 for 50 books.

IMHO, that is a good way to move lots of books.

Everything else, set BIN's.

$5 flat rate 1st class or priority, this pits your listings closer to the top in search results.Make it a $5 flat rate no matter what you list, you'll get more sales if shipping stays at $5 for a second book etc.

Priority Shipping also lets you pack books up, leave them by your door for the mailman to pickup via free online scheduled pickups.

If it's a hot book, or a key, an auction may be the way to go. If it's run of the mill, even in high grade, buy it now is probably the way to go, but be prepared to sit on it a while until the right buyer comes along. Oddly, I've had some books go higher after putting them at auction, than what I had the buy it now price set before I switched them to an auction.

If it is a crazy hot book, an auction format is doable.

I barely list anything on eBay, I buy and hoard.

The books I don't set aside for grading, I save them for wall books at shows or convention bin stock.

Whenever I bother to list raws on eBay, they take about 3 months to sell.

Even than, they have to be priced at half Overstreet.

Here is a book that I pulled out of my $10 convention boxes about 3 months ago....I had this NM- copy and a VF/NM copy in my $10's, figured I'd post the slightly higher grade copy on eBay, and get $24.99 + $5/shipping.

Nope, had to wait IIRC, 3-4 months for it to sell at half Overstreet.😂🤣

OTOH, here is a seller who sold the same book, same grade....and gave free shipping.....he got $7.09 for it in auction.

So after free shipping, he sold a $35 book for about ONE DOLLAR.

If you do decide to go ahead and sell - you could also try to list in this Forum.

Wow, last year it was holding strong in the low 20ks. Thats a HUGE swing in a short time.

Certified categories stand at
CBCS 12,984
CGC 113,778
PGX 5,331
Uncertified/Unspecified 3.67 million

CBCS shows up in 10% of the graded books. Not good. That number should be equal or greater than the ratio of years in business to CGC (~22%) as it was last year.

@shrewbeer

Interesting data. Perhaps caused by the super slow TAT? The additional 8 thousand books are waiting to be graded?
