Larry Lieber Blank Cover Sketch or Signature5280

Collector spfd18 private msg quote post Address this user
I'm new to having blank cover sketches done on comic books, and don't know what certain artists charge for sketches. This past November I had Scott Koblish do a fully rendered colored wraparound cover drawing of Deadpool for $160, which is currently in grading with CBCS. With that being said, I'm planing on attending East Coast Comic Con in NJ this April; and would love to get Larry Lieber to sign a few books for me, as well as a sketch of Ant-Man, Ironman, Thor, or Spiderman. Does anyone have any experience with getting a sketch done from him, and approximately what the cost would be? How is the quality of the sketch? Also how much does he charge to sign books? I'm trying to save money now for the show, while also trying to decide if its worth it price wise. Cause I'm not looking to spend for example $700 on a sketch, and get back a poor quality sketch, like the ones that Frank Miller does. (Pictured Below).

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user
One artist I would recommend is Scott Hanna. He does lots of shows and his fees are reasonable. After he did some remarks for me he did a great Gene Simmons sketch on a Kiss blank. He later did another smaller sketch for me but I didn't take a picture of it yet. Here is the sketch he did for me:

Poor quality? I think that's totally cool! Frank Miller has a unique style that's easily recognizable. But like they say about "beauty"... well, you know

Larry Lieber will sign books for $40 I think...but to my knowledge he does not do sketches. He is almost as old as his brother Stan.

@Odins_Raven Damn that kinda sucks. Because of their age, I'm on a mission to try and attempt to get sketches and sigs from all of the great writers and artists of the Silver Age of comics; before they pass on. I believe that these guys made comics for what they are today, and once they are gone; we'll never see anyone equal to them. Thank you for providing the cost of the sigs, I will definitely get a few books sign by him.

@drchaos That's an awesome sketch. I will definitely get a sketch done by him in the near future. I'm not familiar with his work though, could you tell me what he's known for?

@OGJackster I respect and value your opinion, however for me if I was going to pay Frank Miller $700 to do a sketch; I'd expect something more. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of these Frank Miller haters. I actually like his work. Especially his early works on Batman, Daredevil, and of course Sin City. Now if he did a sketch to the quality of the cover he did for Daredevil #184 (pictured below), I'd be perfectly happy with it (granted it wouldn't have any color added). But to pay $700 for a sketch, that looks like a 7 year old did a connect the dots drawing; is unacceptable. To me that shows that the guy just doesn't care about the fans anymore, and has gotten to big for his "britches" (sort of speak); that all he cares about is the money, and just does a 5 minute sketch instead of putting time/effort into it. Hell for about $700, I could get John Romita Sr., Tony Moore, or Neal Adams (whom you can purchase sketched covers from his website) to do a better job. And these guys are big name artists. Below is some of there work.

This is the sketched cover of Deadpool that Scott Koblish did for $160, at New Jersey Comic Expo this past November.

@spfd18 Scott Hanna is primarily known as an inker. I believe he may have inked more books than anyone else. On the New 52 he inked Suicide Squad 1, 6 & 7. More recently he inked some issues of X-Men Blue.

My son absolutely loves getting sketches done. Whenever we are at shows, he usually gets an established artist or 2 but he also gets a few from new or unknown artists. He got the Red Skull and Punisher Sketches(on my profile for $25 & $50). He has obtained quite a few really nice sketches without spending a ton of my money. He's also obtained some sketches spending a ton of my money.

I forgot to add that I believe Larry Lieber is only available exclusively through Desert Wind Comics. Some artists such as him JR Jr., Don Perlin, have exclusive signing contracts through specific facilitators (middle-men) so that if you can't attend the con yourself and you want your books signed then you must submit them through the facilitators and they arrange signings with the artists. You pay their fees as well as the artists fees. When it works, it is convenient but when it doesnt work on occasion is a real headache/nightmare. Not to scare you off, just my personal experience.

@spfd18 Also shows what a good inker can bring to a piece of artwork

I recently sent my Miller Daredevil sketch cover to be inked. I'm really hoping it turns out good. It could use some love.

@dielinfinite Your 100% right. However for me I just can't see spending $700 on a sketch that is virtually unfinished. Then have to go out and find a really good inker and pay say $200-$500 more to have the whole piece finally finished. Now your into the piece for $1000 or more, when for the same money or less; you can get a fully rendered sketch done from a big name artist, or approximately 10 sketches done by up-and-comers/known artists whom aren't at "celebrity status" yet. Just my thoughts.

Ken Bald is older than Stan and he's still rocking sketches.

@Odins_Raven Good to know. And yeah tell me about it! I recently had a bad experience with two books I submitted to Desert Wind Comics. Needless to say I will be using their competitors, Trinity Comics, New York Comics, and Comic Sketch Art for future signings.
