The Golden Age of FANZINES495

Leftover Sundae Gnus CatmanAmerica private msg quote post Address this user
Back in the day when comic fandom was young and excitement over comic collecting was just starting to take hold in the public conscience, teenaged entrepreneurs started publishing their own zines as tributes to favorite characters & publishers. Some fan efforts eventually blossomed into full fledged professional publications and for the creators, careers in the arts. With that as the theme for this thread please feel free to post images of your collected zines.

I'll start it off with my Squa Tront Collection. Squa Tront was the greatest of all EC fanzines and a labor of love that grew into a publication superior in design and content to most professionally published magazines. Originally edited and published by the late Jerry Weist (who deserves a separate thread to cover his own accomplishments for our great hobby).

(Super rare shipping envelope for Squa Tront #4 that was never used because the art was deemed too large under existing postal regulations).

Enjoy!

Great idea for a thread, Cat. Love seeing fanzines from the early days of comic fandom. Keep them coming!

Those are amazing! I have really been looking out for one fanzine in particular. Super Adventures that features a character called Black Nova. Marv Wolfman took marvel to court saying that Nova was his original creation outside of marvel.

Cat, do these count? They are from England and were published in 1973. The back cover to #11 is better than the front.

I have a stack of The Comics Journal that was published in the 70's and 80's by Fantagraphics, Inc. I don't know if they are common or not (one says paid circulation 9,000), but the earlier ones came in the mail with an address label stuck directly on the magazine's back cover. They then started putting them in white envelopes (I even saved a few of those for some reason). Not all were received in good condition! Many had great back covers, too.

Obscure 1969 fanzine published by Houston area fans...

One of my earliest published contributions is in the portfolio section of this zine...

Thankfully my artistic skills have improved a bit over the years ... . The zine reproduction is about as good as can be expected from the common non-offset publishing of the era. My best recollection is that some form of stencil or Xerox copying technique was utilized by the publisher.
