Quite some time ago, I purchased some late 70's/early 80's comics that had "Not To Be Sold" stamped on the cover. I nearly tossed them, but ultimately bagged them and stored them and never thought about them again. Today I read something on a blog whereby an individual mentioned "Not To Be Sold" stamped with a rectangular box were advance copies sent out to artist and writers. Anyone know if this is true? Are these Advance copies? Thoughts about potential added value to them? Appreciate all thoughts |

I think I have some like that, that were giveaways at military bases and stores like Sears. Free comics from Big Boy restaurants might be like that also.

I've seen some coming out of the Dave Cockrum collection that Clifford Meth auctions off for charity a couple of times each year. He says they were the copies sent to Mr. Cockrum. I'm not sure if they were advance or just comp copies.

@Nuffsaid111 There’s something similar in music. I have a few vinyls and cds with a “not for resale” label or stamp. They’re usually promos or advanced copies for radio play.

Thanks folks. I didn't think they were much, but with all the discussion within the last 2 years of newsstands and price variants and canadian variants, and etc... I was thinking "hmmmmm--- maybe?"![]() |

"Not to be Sold" and "Complimentary Copy" stamps were used in the '70s/'80s on copies printed in the Sparta plant. Some went to artists as comp copies, but the huge majority of them were given to employees who worked at the factory. There would be bundles of 25 to 50 different books on skids by the exit. Employees could take a bundle every week on their way to the parking lot. It was a neat perk of working there.

Does the stamp effect the grade of the book? Quote:Originally Posted by SteveRicketts |

@SteveRicketts To be clear, these are completely different, correct? And if so, any value, scarcity or collectability in these free previews sent out by DC and Marvel?![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Yeah, these are totally different. The pics above are for publisher previews that are generally 8.5 x 11 inches, non color (I've seen one on colored paper but just black ink)and with no ads. Unless I have completely misunderstood the original poster, these would be the same books that were sold on the stand, cover to cover, color throughout, with ads but had "Not to be sold" stamped on the cover. |
