Recently came across a DC Comics Collector’s 20-Pack from 1993 containing a Batman Adventures 12.

The BA 12 looks minty mint. Tempted to send it in for grading (there are no 9.9s of this book on the CGC census). However, also like how it presents in the sealed pack.

Here's a reference pic.

Nice score! I started collecting that series when it came out but stopped after issue 7.

I heard stories that back in the day Costco had an entire endcap with those bundles of 20 DC and they all had the Batman Adventure 12.

I believe it. All of the packs I've seen also have the BA 12 showing on "top".

No doubt that's true, but BA #12 wasn't a "thing" until about 2009, so it's unlikely that anyone would have noted that book out of many. It was just one of the many that DC made from 1992-1996, every month.

Before then, you could buy the 20 pack on eBay for $10-$20, because that's what they were worth.

For a very long time, the market as a whole didn't recognize BA #12 as Harley's first appearance...everyone went after Mad Love.

It's too bad Harley couldn't wait a couple of months. Jan '94 was when the DC packs started carrying the "DC Universe" UPC box logo. Can you imagine the craziness for a "variant" BA #12...?

It sure would spur the market for the DCUs.

To grade or not to grade...

What would be the odds that the most valuable standard run DC comic from the 1990's is on top of a bulk 20 pack at discount stores. Since it was on top, I think many if not most acquired handling damage and bends to the book knocking it down from ultra high grade.

True dat.

Those 20 packs are a smorgasbord of crunched up books.

Question: what was the most valuable standard run DC comic from the 1990's BEFORE BA #12...?

(There's a prize if anyone guesses correctly!)

My guess would be Sandman.

Nope. BA #12 started gaining momentum in 2009-2010. The later printings (and 1st Doomsday) didn't start to advance until 2013.

Nope. Sandman #1 and #8 are 80's books, and were, even at their peak, never more expensive than Superman #75. To be fair, the most valuable DC IN the 90's was Superman #75...hitting an astronomical $100 in late 1992...but that wasn't the most valuable 90's DC before BA #12 took over.

Hint: it's not a headliner title.

When you say "before" do you mean printed prior to September 1993?

Back on topic, I think the issue you're going to have, CC, is bending damage on the back cover from the shrinkwrap. If there are no color breaks, you should be ok to have it pressed out, but it was just the nature of those packs, especially after 24 years in them.

No, the most valuable "printed in the 90's DC" before BA #12 took over that title. That is, the most valuable issue up to 2010-ish. BA #12 was worthless up until then...literally, even when Harley had her first brief moment of fame in the mid-90's, the one everyone thought was her first appearance was Mad Love; BA #12 was completely ignored.

(and to be fair, this WAS a regular issue book, but it was recalled, so it doesn't technically meet the criteria, but it was intended to be a regular issue book. If we go with books that actually made it to the regular newsstand/comics shop, the answer's different.)

Yes, that's what was, prior to BA #12 becoming $1,000+ by 2013, the most valuable 90's DC regular issue...although, again, it technically doesn't count, since it never made it to stores in North America.

There's another issue that did. Which is it...?
