Was on facebook, in the comic book section, and a guy posted a pic of his Secret Wars #8 in a 9.6 label. He states it was a graded 8.0 and he had it cleaned and pressed, and it then graded 9.6 I have never done anything like that with a book, but wanted to know if this is a one in a million happenstance, or does this happen now and then? |

Think it would be unusual but not impossible. Would have to be a book with large non-color breaking creases or something similar which can can be pressed out and is significant enough to have the grade drop to 8.

So basically, a wrinkled book that was structurally sound otherwise?

This guys book might be a record holder for highest rise in grade. Maybe. I haven't seen anything on another jump in grade that significant. |

Usually happens with something like a large non-color breaking crease over the length of the book.

Shhhh...I do it all the time but not some modern book I do it with golden age. Before...after...and graded... it's easy to do with modern. ![]() ![]() ![]() @conditionfreak |

I remember Steve showing some before and after pancaking of a GS X-Men #1 that were absolutely amazing. But you are talking about books that are a wrinkled mess, but don't have much in the way of wear and tear or color-breaking folds. So a pretty rare combo.

Here is something you won't see any other pressers or cleaners doing. So to answer you question yes an 8.0 coukd be moved to a high grade if ut has no damage and just bends and rolls. They are easily removed.![]() Takes about an hour of focused removal. Meaning if you don't concentrate on the book you are cleaning you can easily tear, cause marks, abrasions, color loss ![]() |

If that is the same book, I am indeed impressed. I can not see even a remnant of the writing on the cover. Amazing. Can a moisture spot be removed that well? |

I hand pressed the spine roll out of this book in 20 minutes just to show a guy I know on here it can be done. Hand pressing is tricky but best way to remove stuff like this. Its an ok book now, but had it in my never to be graded box, but maybe worth it now lol![]() ![]() @conditionfreak |

@conditionfreak if it's just water it can be removed. Often times water stains are pure like as if ut were distilled water. A lot of times they have dirty and oils in them. I have take some out with liquid dry cleaning solution mixed down to a very mild solution. Then rinsed with distilled water. It's a crap shoot

Quote:Originally Posted by conditionfreak From what I've been told "Cleaning" a comic book falls under "RESTORATION" and "RESTORATION" lowers the value by 50%. Case in point: I bought at auction U.S.A COMICS #1, It had been graded by CGC at a 9.0 (Restored). I had it appraised and it came back not at the OVERSTREET 2016-17, (9.0) for $12,000 but at max $6,000. I paid less than $1,600 for it. So if that SECRET WARS #8 was graded, I'm pretty sure it would say on the label "Slight restoration" which would lower the value by up to 50% |

Dry cleaning is not considered restoration - I could post the link to the CGC site but I'm tired and lazy ![]() |

@Rafel cleaning comics using liquid solutions garnishes the Restoration notation.

I had a 8.5 go to 9.6 (might have been 9.4, can't remember) and didn't do a thing to it. Shows how consistent that other company is, and I'm not talking about PGX

I'll have to take a photo when i get home but i have a teen titans 1 with maybe a dime sized water stain on the back cover that does not affect any interrior pages...i thought it was beyond fixing...is there a way to remove the stain without getting the restored kiss of death??

@KatKomics depends on who does it, if it can be removed. A lot of people think a water spot is just water often it's something more
