Rick and Morty - what books to get?4554

Ok...so coming to this a bit late...just got the channel on free preview and have been watching some shows - very funny stuff.

Issue 1 seems a bit out of reach - what other issues should I pick up?
#2 seems to go for relatively cheap $25 in raw - any 1st app etc I should look out for?

I just started picking up the series, I picked up a few first ed but I use this site for a general idea of what to pay. I’m not a TPB fan so it’s been a little pricy picking up the comics on eBay trying to catch up with what’s out now.

Eh you're not THAT late. @kaptainmyke probably knows more about it than anyone I know. I DO know its white hot and probably will continue to be so considering there is literal sauce from McDonalds on ebay going for $200 bucks

probably smart investing now!

@KatKomics
Honestly some of the Variant covers Ive seen go for a lot. I wouldn’t grab a #1 unless you can afford a 9.8. I WOULD however grab up some of the 2nd 3rd and 4th printings though! 😎

IMHO, The "Stupid Money" being paid for these books could be much wiser spent on some nice Silver Age Keys. If you haven't cashed in on the hype by now you've likely missed out already. I just don't see these types of books holding any long term investment value.

I got a 9.6 cbcs 1st printing for sale at $399: clickable text

The book is extremely hard to get at 9.6 or higher because of that all black back cover.

Other variants worth collecting:

#1 1st Printing
#1 1:50 Retailer Incentive Justin Roilant variant (estimated less than 25 copies exist)
#1 four color grails variant
#1 3rd Printing
#1 4th Printing
#3 regular cover (I don't own one)
#4 CJ Cannon variant
#11 wondercon variant
#16 Last of Us Variant
#25 c2e2 sketch covers by Kyle Starks or CJ Cannon go for $200+
#26 Meeseeks Variant

I agree. These books will be worth a fraction of what they're selling for now in a year or two.

If everyone expects Rick and Morty bubble to burst, and it never does, the collectibles could skyrocket even more due to popularity and rarity over demand.

I have a theory only since there are no known official print runs of most comics books anywhere with the exception of more recent inhouse studio publishers like Aspen or J Scott Campbell.

With that disclaimer said, we're talking about a 1:50 retailer incentive order comic book. The first question to ask truly is: How many of the largest comic book stores are there in America?

A comic book that most local comic book stores did not order. At all. Few did. I only hear of them anecdotally anyhow from fellow fans. So, if nobody hardly ordered them, yet you had to be bold enough and Rick Sanchez enough to order 50 copies for your store, you received one of these. Let's pretend for a second it was on the top of the stack from Diamond Comics, too for maximum minty freshness, too. That all black back cover is a true pain to deal with. Now if all these planets were in line just right, during the second equinox of an otherwise impossible feat to accomplish, you had a copy to sell in your store. Honestly, I don't even know how these exist in the wild. So if there are 2500 comic shops in America (Diamond has allegedly 2875 accounts in 2017, up 3% from 2010) and only 100 of those 2500 are big time shops like Mile High Comics in Colorado, MyComicShop in Texas, Forbidden Planet, Midtown and Jetpack Comics covering the NE, etc., those shops most likely are where these variants come from. So take the numbers of the biggest grossing comic stores in the USA and there's your answer. The largest states with the largest number of people per capita per square mile with enough strip centers and demographical regions. North Dakota, Alaska and Montana and Wyoming sadly don't count because come on, they're North Dakota, Alaska, Montana, and Wyoming, lol. "flyover states"

So a 1:50 cover from one of the top comic stores in the country with enough overhead to swing over 50-100 copies of each issue on a subscription basis with Diamand can be a very vague question to answer without enough data. 18 out of 50 states cover this criteria. so let's do that:

- 1:50 cover
- 18 out of 50 states ordered it hypothetically
- 6 / 18 are huge states with lots of money so let's pretend they ordered 100-200 copies: 24
- Let's pretend those 24 survived Diamond Distributors' packing/shipping to the LCBS
- 3-5 of those 24 were shipped to grading from the comic shops

Edit: I've seen that 41 total are on census with CGC and CBCS according to sales data reports for all time at gocollect.com database. I'm not sure exactly of the numbers graded over raw.

Regardless, this book is very rare and scarce.

@kaptainmyke unless the publisher sells their unsold incentive copies at a yard sale later. It has happend before. The amount of books available does not depend on how many books the shops ordered but on how many copies the publisher printed. Only the publisher knows.

Although I'm really liking the show (still watching season 1) $500 puts me into really good silver age books...Strange Adventures 205 comes to mind...
