I have an FF#1 raw off the newsstand purchased when I was 5 years old. Didn't start collecting vs. just reading until several years later so it has a "pocket crease" unfortunately. Nice and flat now but the damage is done, mostly noticeable in the cover color break in the monster's head. The fold is not noticeable on the inside pages and barely noticeable on the back cover. I have a question on grading. CBCS Grading Guideline indicate the book could be in the Fine range yet other grading guidelines such as Overstreet are pretty explicit that book length fold/crease force a book to Good/Very Good (a ~2.0-3.0 difference for one defect). I am entering my collection of 21K comics in ComicBase using the CBCS Guideline but was curious what to enter this issue as grade-wise. Opinions?![]() |

There have been books with "subscription creases" (what you're calling a pocket crease) as high as 6.5...just depends on the severity, and the rest of the book. In your case, barring any serious problems on the back cover, it's probably a 4.0-4.5, as mentioned. Perfect copy for a Silver Age key. That's amazing that you bought it at 5, and managed to hold on to it for nearly 60 years! |

I call it a pocket crease because I think one of my buddies back then folded it and put it in his pocket. Ha. Plus FF#1 was too early for Marvel subscriptions.

Sure, there's nothing wrong with calling it a pocket crease, since that's what it was. I don't know if FF #1 was too early for Marvel subscriptions, but it certainly would have been for FF #1. I'm not really sure! I know Disney had subs going back to the 40s, if not the 30s, and I *think* EC had them...not sure if Atlas, which wasn't *quite* Marvel in the summer of 1961, would have had them. It's an interesting question, though. |

Based on that picture, the book presents very well. I'd love a book like that in my collection, so kudos.

It's always really neat to see a collector pull out a book like this bought off the newsstand themselves. Awesome! 4-6.5 or not, the sentimental value on it has got to be through the roof. @ComixPop thanks for posting! |

Heck, you could still get brand new Morgan and Peace dollars from the bank for $1. |

Being 5 at the time,I think I mainly only dealt in pennies. ![]() I remember scrounging every week or two for spare change or begging mom and dad to let me do something for them in return for a few comics. I was really hooked on Superboy, Adventure (Legion of Superheroes) and FF. I still have most of those early books in my collection. I just retired so am looking forward to spending more time on my favorite hobby. |

When I first started collecting, FF was not even 30 years old (1989-1990) Hard to imagine almost as much time has passed between then and now, as between 1961 and then. I tell my parents "You could have been RICH if you'd just spent $2 on Amazing Fantasy #15s and put them in a box for 50 years!" They look at me like I've lost my mind. ![]() ![]() |

You can't grade books from pictures and you can't grade a book just from the front cover. Faint subscription (where they folded the book to mail it) or as you say pocket creases can grade as high as 6.0-6.5. However, 5.0-5.5 is much more common. I have several such books in my own collection. CGC's grading in my experience is similar for this defect. Grading companies do not grade according to Overstreet Guidelines. Overall Overstreet and CGC/CBCS tend to be similar. But there a fair number of clear differences. This defect is one of them. |

@ComixPop How are the staples? The bottom one looks rusty. That will also affect the grade.
