Michael Golden - what sketch to get?4351

past performance is no guarantee of future actions. KatKomics private msg quote post Address this user
I usually like to go with a sketch from either
a) character they created
b) character they are well known for
c) I like 1950's style space scenes (you know -with fishbowl helmets and lazer guns)
d) trying to find right artist for western i.e. Lone Ranger

Thinking Rogue, Acroyear or Marionette?
Leaning toward Acroyear - if I can afford it maybe with Marionette

Although co-created Rogue I'm not quite sure a Rogue sketch could be that good.

Hope to commission Byrne to get a Sabretooth next year to match my Trimpe Wolvie (really should have gotten Hulk instead)

A Michael Golden Acroyear and Marionette sketch together would be bad ass! I'm an X-Men fan a lot more than a Micronauts fan though, so I would personally get a Rogue sketch.

I'm still waiting to hear back from Byrne's guy. Hopefully he accepts my commission idea. Good luck on your Golden commission!

You could get a sketch like this from him where he takes your money and just holds it for an extended period and then he gets annoyed when you ask for an update. He then sends a lame sketch with a statement of how he feels and misspells a word on top of that.

That sucks. Did he at least make it right?

I don't think so. This was posted on John Byrne's message board. John Byrne offered Mr. Turnbull a free sketch if I recall correctly.

I've dealt with Mr. Golden one time and I don't plan on ever dealing with him again because of his attitude. If he was at a show, I would not even stop to look at his table. I'd keep walking.

A John Byrne sketch would be nice (especially free)

This sketch if useless though. I wouldn't display it.

I agree. I think it's best to pay after the piece is completed. Artists do sketches to fill in during those times when their good paying jobs aren't coming in. If they have deadlines to meet for a commercial client, they aren't worried about that one time sketch you've purchased.

My little guy is getting into comics and he loves sketch covers. He really enjoys going to cons, meeting artists and getting a sketch.

That's cool. I like the same. There's a big difference between creators though. David Mack gave me three comics of his work once while someone like Michael Golden tries to tell me how important his Toyboy art is and why it should be priced $200 above any realistic market price. Some creators actually appreciate their fans while others act like you are a burden for even standing at their table. His business partner came up while he was talking to me and started telling him there might be a contact for commercial work. At that point he simply ignored the fact we were talking and listened to her. There are plenty of creators that appreciate their fans. I prefer to avoid the ones that don't.

He already has a few favorite artists and thankfully, (so far)they are all great with their fans, especially kids. Last con we were at, my son was talking with Robert Pope. Someone walked up to Pope and started talking over my son. Pope looked at the person and said, "excuse me but he was talking" (meaning my son). He then asked my son to finish what he was saying. My son said he could wait if Pope needed to talk to the guy. Pope said, "I do. but he's not more important than you. He can wait. Please continue". They talked for another 10 minutes and Pope was completely engaged in the conversation. It was a great experience, especially since Pope is probably my son's favorite artist.

Wow..that's great...so far my son has mostly Greg Hyland lego sketches in his book - in our experience Greg has always been fantastic!

Wow!! Super dick move..I'm just hoping for a convention sketch so usually a time limit - we'll see if I can make it to his table before his orders are maxed for the day.

In his defense, there is a completely different mindset between people who do contract work and people like me who have been a slave to the clock all of my life. With contract work, you have to be shopping for your next job while you are doing 2 or 3. Their promises are more figurative than literal. With me, if I say I'm going to do something, you can pretty much write it in stone that it'll happen. With contract work, the best you can say it... "that was the plan."

I don't know how fast he is, but it's always a good thing if the artist is stuck at a show. You have better odds of getting the piece that day. If he has to take it home and mail it to you, all bets are off.

Michael is a great guy. When you give him money for a sketch, make sure you are super patient with him because patience is a virue. At least that's what his handler told me after she parked her broom in her parking space.

Oh and don't tell her that you want Michael to sketch a Doctor Strange for you, because when you do, she is going to demand more money due to the difficulty level of Doctor Strange. And then only "lowering the price" when she saw me, I mean, she sees you putting your cash back into your wallet with the disgust look on your face.

Sorry to burst your bubbles, but they are out of stock because my wife bought the last one.

Michael is a much, much, much, nicer guy without the "She who shall not be named". Mark Texeira can vouch this.

Don't forget the hand gesture that Strange is making.
