Yes I saw that. I was just musing if that made it "official".
I suppose Overstreet has the final say on most things.

You're welcome. I actually got the info from a post on pence variants from "across the street".

Yes, a few of the posters over there made the same point. I keep logging in occasionally to see if I have been expunged.

Yep those are the UK reprints. In the 50s/60s the UK reprints were very close to the US sizing but in the 70s onward they were printed in tabloid and magazine sizes as per English comics.

That "Spider-Man No More" issue was printed on newsprint so because of the size and the (non) quality of of the paper stock UK comics are much harder to store and find in high or even mid grade.

Yours looks to be one of the better ones I've seen and for 9.95 Euros was a nice pick-up.

This is what UK newsprint comics usually look like :

I posted up an article on Pence variants a while back.

The books with the lowest print runs are from the first year that DC and Marvel put out pence variants.

Those are the ones to hunt down, above all others.

I would assume this book is a reprint and did not come out when TOS 39 came out in the U.S.

My first and only pence stamp comic! I really like the character the old ink stamps added. I'm pretty sure these are not labelled UK editions or variants by CGC or CBCS. Not sure how long this practice was used until they started printing the pence on the covers but I definitely prefer it over the printed price stamp.

Seems obvious to me that a .12 cent book with a stamp on it, was an American issued book that somehow made its way to the U.K. and they put their own price on it with a stamp. Either as a back issue, or shipped over because of excess new stock.

But you knew all of that.

Isn't that a hot book? First appearance of somebody?

Speaking of price variants, I've recently read that some Canadian price variants actually have a sticker on them, rather than being printed or stamped. Here's an example (below).

I originally thought this was just some retailer squeezing out a few more pennies and hurting the comics. But now I'm wondering if this was done at the printer's or something. My original plan was to (eventually) have the sticker removed by a good press/clean. Now maybe I'll leave it be. Thoughts?

A sticker thst has been on a book since the late 1960's, cannot be remedied with s "good press and clean", to begin with.

Atte.pting to do so would result in paper loss, discoloration and staining.

The only proper solvent that can be used to do so, will leave a chemical residue, on a book with such an old sticker. i.e. a restored label.

I would hold off on slabbing that book.intil CBCS/CGC informs you that the sticker will not impact the grade.

Not saying that the book can't be dry cleaned and pressed, just don't ask your presser to remove the sticker.Any competent presser would not attempt to do so, anyway.

Yes this is an Alan Class comic. The Alan Class logo sometimes became Approved Comics. Class and other UK publishers in the 50s to the 70s republished 68 to 100 page anthologies of stories from a variety of publishers usually in black and white.

The cover story might not even be the lead story in a lot of these.

All the indicia about the UK publisher/ printer is usually (but not always) found at the bottom of one of the covers and there will usually be house ads about upcoming issues.

These comics were never dated (to give them extra shelf life?) and the above is c1965.

Correct. A price stamp on a book does not make it a variant. It's a cents copy with an import stamp. As well these Thorpe and Porter stamps for the UK I have also seen cents copies with Kenyan and Eire import price stamps

Love to hear about the pence copies! Long I have been arguing with collectors who would have nothing to do with these books that they are legitimate "variants" and are incredibly rare compared to the US copies. Many collectors wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire, which I can only interpret as ignorance or fear of the truth.

I love collecting foreign (non-US) comics, especially the pence books. At one point I had the highest graded pence TTA 27 5.5 copy double signed; after I sold that in'15 I purchased the highest graded pence copy of WWBN 32. Pence comics are fun to collect and that is really what its all about. Finding new and untraveled paths in this heavily trafficked hobby are getting harder, so take advantage of the road less traveled if you're into that sorta thing.
