" UK British PENCE cover Price VARIANT Editions have been picking up in demand, mainly to Marvel Completionists at this point. These Marvel's were printed in USA & originally ONLY for sale in UK. They appeared periodically from 1961 thru to the 1980's, with many interruptions. The 1960's UK Price Variants were printed simultaneously with the US Editions & are now Officially Considered "VARIANT" Originals (See Overstreet #41 Article on pages 1010-1038). UK editions of expensive books like Amazing Spider-Man #1 and TTA #27 as still harder to sell, as buyers still lack the knowledge to realize they are perhaps 20 to 100 Times Scarcer than the original US printings. There were many "ND" (Not Distributed) periods in UK, where NO copies (USA Printings or UK Printings) were DISTRIBUTED & thus those issues are scarcer overseas. (best Referenced in the 1997-98 McAlpine guide); The bestseller UK Variants this year are those Bronze Age Comics with the "MARVELALL-COLOUR COMICS" Banner across the top of the front cover, mostly in the 1974-1980 era, at 120-135% GUIDE".

The above is part of a market report by Doug Sulipa in The UK Price Guide for Comics. Full article here clickabletext.

The enboldened text was highlighted by me. I'm wondering where this "officially considered" came from. CBCS still marks pence variants as "UK Editions" will this now change?

@Redshade the guy I am buying all this high grade uninteresting (to me) silver and bronze age stuff from had a lot of pence issues which I passed over. I am going back this week to skim the rest of the boxes I didn't get a chance to look though yet. Now I guess I'll go back and pull any high grade pence issues, lol.
I took what I thought had value but don't do silver and bronze age really so I figured I would grab the #1's he had.
Not sure if you saw some.of the stuff I got from him but he had lots of pence versions of these titles. Stuff like the attched pics. Ended up buying g 100 books for 2k, or 20.00 a book. All NM unread

@earthshaker01

Who is the chap you buy these from? It is very difficult to find UK pence newsstand variants in such nice grade or to find them in such quantity as this.

@Redshade uhhh a local guy with about 5k comics from about 1965 on up. He quit collecting a decade ago and wants to sell all of it at once but let's me pick some. I just called him. I am going back tonight to finish looking through boxes "L thru Z" , now I think I'll start over and skim for pence issues. Hover they will need to be 9.0 or higher or I won't collect them

@Redshade apologies for the off-topic post, and you may not even be close, but I'll be staying in Victoria for a week in '18; any shops you might recommend? I've never purchased a pence variant.

I dont think it will change, as CBCS noting a book as a "UK edition" is essentially the same thin as saying "pence variant" 👍🏻. Idk where "official" came from either, but by definition any book of the same story/time-printing with a different cover is technically a variant 🍺

I presume you mean Victoria, Borough of Westminster and not the State of Victoria, Australia (Or indeed the one in BC Canada).

No I'm at the other end of the Country and have no knowledge of London comic shops. There are a few UK posters on this forum who may be able to advise you better.

The Grand Comics Database puts pence variants in the US listings at the side of the US printings and not in the foreign reprints section.

@Redshade I just read an articlean regarding 30 cent variants I should probably look for when I'm looking for the pence variants. Article said there were 186 marvel issues that had 30 cent covers.

Interesting. In that case I would assume Canada is not considered foreign as well? I wonder what the logic is behind this, simply english?

I don't own any pence X-Men issues, yet. But I wouldn't mind filling in a few holes (still looking for nice copies of 49, 62, 67, 69, 70, 72, 73, 75-85, 87, 88, 90, 92-94, 100, 102, 104, and 111). If the price and condition are right, I would take either the US or English version.

There were 107 issues of X-Men with pence variants before Marvel changed to dual pricing for US and UK and then to triple pricing US/CAN/UK.

1 - 7 priced 9d
13 - 24 priced 10d
27 - 37 priced 10d
55 - 66 priced 1/-
73 - 86 priced 6p
89 - 90 priced 7p
91 - 93 priced 8p
96 - 98 priced 9p
99 - 101 priced 10p
108 - 120 priced 12p
123 - 133 priced 12p
134 - 136 priced 15p
138 - 141 priced 15p
144 - 152 priced 20p

I am currently trying to put together a graded collection of pence copies of (Uncanny) X-Men from 141 downwards (142 and 143 being ND as you know) as far as I can afford.

I have 141 (9.0), 140 (9.4), 139 (9,0), 138 (9.0), (137 ND), 136 (9.0), 135 (9.4), 134 (9.0), 133 (9.2), (132 Missing), 131 (8.5), 130 (9.6) , (129 Missing) ,128 (8.0) ,127 (9.2) ,126 (9.4), 125 (8.0), 124 (8.0), 123 (9.4), (121 and 122 ND), 120 (9.2), 119 (9.6), 118 (9.6), 117 (9.4), 116.(9.6), 115 (9,4), 114 (9.0), 113 (9.2), 112 (9.4) (111 Missing) 110 (9.4) and 99 (8.0) and 64 (7.5).

As I recall the Can/UK/US variants are all together in the US section.

Yes that is an American published UK variant.

The magazine and digest sized ones are most likely UK published reprints.

Yep those are the UK reprints. In the 50s/60s the UK reprints were very close to the US sizing but in the 70s onward they were printed in tabloid and magazine sizes as per English comics.

That "Spider-Man No More" issue was printed on newsprint so because of the size and the (non) quality of of the paper stock UK comics are much harder to store and find in high or even mid grade.

Yours looks to be one of the better ones I've seen and for 9.95 Euros was a nice pick-up.

Yes I saw that. I was just musing if that made it "official".
I suppose Overstreet has the final say on most things.
