Marvel Spotlight #2 Werewolf by Night4210

So i FINALLY nabbed myself a copy of this book that I've been after for a while...

I'm pretty happy with the condition and it looks at first glance to be around a 6.0/6.5...

however.. there is a purple stain down the spine that runs ever so slightly on to the back cover too.

is this a printing defect? would it affect the grading
?

i seem to recall seeing this purple ink stain elsewhere in the past but just thought it was a spillage or similar.

any help would be appreciated!

The truth of the matter is when comics were sold at news stands, they were returnable just like un-bought newspapers. The distributors would collect all the returns and run a brush with purple ink across the tops of the books to indicate they were returns and not to re-distribute. Many would find their way into collectors hands or most likely persons who just enjoyed reading them! Hope this clears it up for you. It is my understanding that since this was a normal practice that it doesn't take away from the book. Nuff said.

@Doc_Cop cool knowledge. thanks for the info!

hopefully then, I'm good with my guess of a 6.0/6.5 grading?

the purple should hurt the grade

My pleasure! I think you are spot on with your grading and stain should not impact grading but will be mentioned in the details. Great pick-up.

Thanks Brian,

I enjoy collecting key Bronze and silver age books. On the hunt for high grade Marvel Premiere #3 currently. Have a great Labor Day weekend!

That much over spray of distributor ink would be a defect factored into the grade. However, it would be a much bigger factor in the grade of an otherwise high grade copy. Low and mid grade copies it wouldn't have much or any effect grade wise
