World Color Press used to have banks of "slugs" to change parts of the cover printing, for ID and Direct, UK editions etc. Then the print run would be interrupted to change them as the ratio was determined. Not all of the ones destined for the differing outlets made it as planned however.

Apparently the marvel direct "diamond" was the inspiration for the name Diamond Comic Distributors...

"Geppi named his new company 'Diamond' "after the imprint Marvel Comics used on non-returnable comics," and although the "publisher discontinued the symbol" months later, the name remained.[2] "Diamond grew an average of 40 percent a year," as comics retail took off."

Well, not to be contrary but Geppi himself told me that it was based on his first love; baseball. A look into his history will show just how much the Orioles meant to him back then (mid 1980s).
