Personally, I'd prefer a slight grade bump (in this case, maybe a 9.2?) but I guess "that's a good looking 9.0, CHECK! ✅" serves a purpose.

Thanks for the confirmation. I can't decide whether I am in favour of this. Probably not. This does of course beg the question : If it's a superior looking 9.0 and yet doesn't quite make 9.2 why not just call it a 9.1?

Great question!

Interestingly enough, coins do that very thing in the highest grades...filled in the "in between" numbers, before the various stars and pluses that are the check marks of the coin hobby.

Eventually, if enough people keep asking for it, these grades will be adopted.

And...it's a 9.0...today.

On another go-round...since we know that, by CBCS standards, this is a strong 9.0...it might very well grade that 9.2.

That grade is only valid for that book on the day it was graded. Any other day, it could be something else, because........grading is subjective!

It just seems to be a retrograde step to start having ticks. What if there were two 9.0ticks and one was a teeny weeny bit better than the other, would it be 9.0tickticktick?

Thank you for this chart. There should be odd number grades other than ".5's". That would solve any questions on grades. Coins graders don't have a skip number system when grading coins.

Darth, was not the numerical system supposed to supplant previous system? Forget about G/VG/F/VF etc so we don't even have to try to exactly correlate the two.

I think the intention was to supplement and simplify rather than supplant. Although it may very well lead toward that one day. And may eventually expand. I hope not, I like the current system. And the way Overstreet has it laid out makes sense to me. I don't look forward to adding more grades and complication to the system.

Thanks Doc, This kinda proves my point on why comic book grades don't include the odd or in between grades.

Thanks for the link. Not really sure if it adds anything to the discussion.

I am wondering why there has been no input from the grading team (Steve?). This surely needs a review?

Exactly. The last thing needed is to be even more confusing for new people entering an already niche hobby.

Think about the people pushing for the 9.1, 9.3 etc grades. Who would they benefit? The seller.

Book x in 9.8 worth $500, in 9.6 $150. Seller believes his "crappy" 9.6 should be in a 9.8 holder because grading is just an opinion and his opinion differs from people who get paid to have an opinion.

CPR the book in hopes of getting the coveted 9.8? Even better, if the book was a 9.7 then you could split the difference in price between that 9.8 and 9.6.

Hmm, maybe it's not so crazy after all

Does this apply to all grades or just 9.0 and above?

If it were to be implemented I think it would be for all grades.

As it is at present the numerical system is a bit chaotic. It goes up in increments of 0.2 in the 9.0 to 9.8 range but then uses a 9.9 and a 10, whilst in the other grades the increases are by 0.5. And then of course there is that isolated 1.8 at the bottom and then the lower ones again revert to 0.1 and 0.2 steps.

That's why I hope it never gets implemented, because where does the madness end? Do we see a time where someone calls in to complain that their 9.7.5 should be a 9.7.6?

I think the grading scale has ended up as it is because different ends of the scale tend to be used for separate ages. Anything below 5-6 isn't used much for modern stuff, but regarding golden age stuff, the 1-2s need to be broken down a bit more

Always felt this should have been at least a 7.0.
