Keeping track of you collection398

I might start using a service like one of these. I pretty much know every issue I have but it would be nice to have it all down in black and white somewhere.

On stuff I know I have, I'm using MS Excel.

Coder. You could have a much worse fetish.

Oh, I should add that I also have a simple list of my "good stuff" on my iphone using the database app Tap Forms. It was cheap, and it's super easy to use and customize. Highly recommend it...

Same here. I love their phone app too, I've used it as a checklist when I'm out and about many times.

I use ComicBase Archive Edition which I recently upgraded in order to be able to to view my collection in my phone or tablet. I like it a lot and hope to figure out how to use it to keep track of my OA collection too! I have more than 15,000 comics so it would be hard to write everything down, hell it was even difficult to input all those boxes into the software..

I'm currently trying to decide between Comic Collectorz and Comicbase. I'm leaning towards Comicbase because I see it has a feature to print out information labels, which is something I want to do. I haven't found such a feature in the trial version of Collectorz, but if that feature exist somewhere in Collectorz someone let me know. I'm also leaning towards Comicbase because of the integration of the price guide. If anyone can share the pros and cons of both of these software's it would help me out.

@DarthLego It doesn't look like Collectorz has that feature but you're not the only one looking for it. This thread has some people using another program to achieve similar results.

Of course you can just get Comicbase and have the feature natively. The lack of any significant price tracking is something else missing almost entirely from Collectorz.

I personally went with Collectorz mostly because of the cost and I've been very happy with it but it also seems my needs vary from yours. I mostly use it to organize my books into various lists like events/crossovers for reading, what key issues I have, etc. I'm sure there's many features of the program I haven't used.

I've been using CLZ comics for android. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.collectorz.javamobile.android.comics&hl=en

It has an integrated barcode scanner, so it's pretty nice to quickly scan the books into your list. Also comes up with variant covers. It also prompts you in case you accidentally scanned something twice to make sure you meant to. Not the cheapest around, but it works pretty well.

I checked out the free version of Comicbase last night and did not like it at all. The GUI is light years behind Collectorz, the label feature isn't as user customizable as I need it to be, creator information wasn't automatically imported, and when I tried to download a cover image it told me I needed the Archive edition which is the $299 one. So it looks like Collectorz is the one for now.

@DarthLego Did you check out the link I posted where people were working on generating labels from a Collectorz database?

Looks like it might take a little work but it'll get you closer to the feature set that you're looking fo

I did. It appears that he is taking the database information from Collectorz and feeding it into the label program. Once I get my collection fully cataloged I'll take another look at it.

If anyone uses a bar code scanner, I'd be interested to know:
1) do you like it?
2) how difficult is it to enter a book that doesn't have a bar code?
Thanks

I do have a barcode scanner and have used it with Collectorz. It will save you the time of typing titles into the search field (so 5 to 10 seconds?), but you still need to manually select the issue and add it. Adding books is very easy with or without a scanner. If there's a way to rapid scan a whole stack of books I haven't figured it out yet.

Thanks. I watched a you tube video and the guy was just holding the bar code under the scanner and then moving onto the next book. I'd be interested if it saved me a lot of time or effort but just saving typing the title doesn't seem like its worth the $

If that is the same video I saw that was Comicbase, which is a different software than Collectorz. And the version of the software that allows batch scanning is expensive.

I use comic book realm and I can download everything into whatever format csv spreadsheet I want. Useful when sorting by price, value, date, title, etc.

I use CollectorZ and really like it. There are constant updates to the software, and the programmers are open to discussions on improvement / enhancement ideas.

I also like that it allows me to create custom fields to collect the data I'm most interested in. For example, I've created fields for "Sales Price", "Sales Date", "Page Quality", "Pedigree", "Graded?" checkbox, "Purchase Location" and "Forum Member" if purchased from a boardie, among a host of other fields.

Because I collect GA/SA primarily, the most important feature to me is the ability to add my own scans. I don't want stock photos of my comics. CollectorZ allows me to add personal front and back cover scans. I can then access my comic scans on CLZ Cloud and link to them a la photobucket (though my only complaint is that photo size is limited to 420x680 or so.). Plus, creating and pulling reports into MS Excel based on any extract parameters is quite simple. It works for me. I haven't tried the bar code scan function, and I don't purchase more than a couple of comics a week maximum, so can't comment on it's expediency. But it's a great database/archive tool.
