Books from that time period occasionally would be stapled without a cover. Those issues would be re-feed through the machine and emerge with two interior staples and two additional staples that went through the cover and comic. They are not considered a defect and would be noted as extra staples, manufacturing. Also, the only books I can recall seeing with a center staple (and only a center staple) were some issues that were assembled during rationing periods during WWII.

And, the saddle-stitching format of bindery is a fixed position, therefore there is no way that a centre-placed staple could come from the binding process.

Remove the center staple...then what is the grade?

A good point Drogio. Would it be considered amateur restoration (damage)?

I would rather have 3 staples than a book with holes.

If the plan isn't to slab the book, I'd agree don't do further damage. But if the option is a 0.5 grade hit versus a dreaded resto label of death, I'll take the holes.

That's assuming an extra staple would qualify as restoration...I'm not sure it does...but if it did come back as a resto job at least you would know the grade before staple removal.

I believe we can all agree this isn't an 8.5 book. I'm thinking at best 7.5...with a good press. I've got much nice books at 8.5 in cgc slabs, if that tells you something...

Let's assume it's a staple in the middle as I haven't heard back yet.. so a 6.0 if it is?? Maybe 5.0?

Ebay sales figures for a 3-4 of this book are going for $300-400

I have a 7.5 slab that is nowhere near as beat up as this book, I just do not see it getting there.

What they are asking is right in the price range for a 5.0 to 5.5 slab according to GoCollect.

@DarthLego as a long term investment.. assuming I can knock them another $50 or so?...

COLLECTOR DarthLego private msg quote post Address this user
At that price raw I would look for a better copy for my personal collection or long term investment. If you can something that is legit 7.5 up, that would be ideal. I just think this copy is a mine field of problems.

Looking at these slabbed 359 on ebay i can hardly tell them apart and it's ranging from a 2.5 to a 6.0!!!

Apart from the mystery 3rd staple I think that this copy looks as good if not better than the 6 above. Does it not?

@nikki666666

Get a copy of this: https://www.amazon.com/Overstreet-Guide-Grading-Comics-2016/dp/1603601996/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502238600&sr=8-1&keywords=overstreet+grading+guide

Study it cover to cover until you get good at eyeballing grades and getting close. It's a life saver.

@nikki666666 btw, what is your max budget on buying this book?

I think 6.5 maybe without the staple issue, without a pressing. But that staple man, that is hard to get past, at least for me.

@DarthLego I'm hoping it's a trick on the eye and not a staple. I don't want to really go above $500 but don't want anything less than a 6.0 ideally.

You say this is for sale from a local collector? If you have the option of seeing the book in person before buying, then by all means go check it out first. There is just something screwy if it really has a 3rd staple where one would not normally be. Plus, based on the images, there is no way this book is anywhere close to an 8.5, even with a press and clean. Caveat emptor.

Trick of the eye? It's a third staple. I think you are talking yourself into he purchase. All I can say is, I personally would not buy that copy for my collection, and this book is on my grail list.

@DarthLego I've asked for better pics down the spine along with centre spread. It's a 350 mile drive for me to see it so id rather be sure before commiting to anything. I have a second option back up if this is a dud. But other option is from a well respected CS and is a 6.0/5 for roughly the same price

I would just play it safe and pass on this copy, especially if you can't physically inspect the book prior to purchase.

@nikki666666 get pics of the other option, I'd be shocked if it looks worse.
