Art Sketch Covers

Sketch covers non comic book artist?3691

Collector Savage_Spawn private msg quote post Address this user
A local LCS has one of our local artists sketch on various comic books. This local artist is very talented but is not a comic book artist, writer, inker, etc. Is this a common practice? Seems to me that the artist on these comics should be somewhat involved in their production. He sells them for $20 a pop. Thumbs up or thumbs down?

If you like his/her art then I see no problem with it. If youre trying to flip them then yeah price may not fetch top dollar but if its for personal collection then why not. I had this one done in London a couple of months back by a non-comic artist and couldnt be happier.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user
Whenever you are talking about a sketch done on a blank cover the sketch (and the artist on the sketch) are about 95% of the value. The blank and who worked on it are about 5% of the value or less.

Sure it adds to the value if you get the artists / writer from the comic to sign it but the quality of the sketch is most important.

@drchaos maybe i should do some of my own sketch covers if its not about the 'comic artist'??

Im an artist and regally draw DC/Marvel characters on custom shoe orders...

maybe i could make a few bucks doing comics?

@Zombie_Head thank you! I made them for Margot Robbie. She was given them as a gift from Cara Delevigne.

@nikki666666 very cool, nice work!

Although I am not one of them, there is a pretty good market for non-affiliated artist sketch covers on eBay

@nikki666666 WOW,...That is some amazing work!

I have a short box full of various blanks - somewhere.

EDIT: Nope, I was wrong. I went to the other room to check and they are gone. A couple of years ago I sold about 40 short boxes because I wanted to thin my collection and evidently they were part of the fold. CRAP!

@nikki666666 got a link for those kicks? Ive got four littles heading back to school in 6 weeks, would love to know if I can afford your work 😳

Also note if you do some comic blanks you can fill out some paperwork with CBCS to offer yellow labels to your customers

@nikki666666 No reason not to. Those blank covers look much better with a sketch on them.

Most of my sketch covers are from former and current Kubert School students. While I have remarks from artists that actually worked on the books my sketches from Fernando Ruiz, Scott Hanna, Walt Simonson etc. are on blanks they did not actually work on.

I did get Amy Chu to sign my Kiss blank cover but Scott Hanna who did not work on the book drew Gene Simmons on it for me. Will share that one on the boards here in the next week or two. Just got it done at Garden State Comic Fest.
