Who grades tougher? CGC or CBCS3625

Collector harmonicaman private msg quote post Address this user
Here is a listing that just ended. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Amazing-Spider-Man-36-CBCS-9-2-WHITE-pgs-1st-app-The-Looter-better-than-CGG/142442008645

The seller states: "Frequently CBCS slabbed books aren't quite as high standard as CGC, but in this books case, it's better than most CGG 9.2!"

What is the consensus here? Which is better a Silver Age CGC graded 9.2 or a CBCS graded 9.2? What about other grades and Golden and Bronze Age comics?

There isn't much of a difference from what I've seen. I subbed a bunch of CGC slabs to CBCS last year and all came back equal or up/down one. The majority stayed equal.

From the current data thread we have going it's a 70% chance of having them grade the same book the same grade.

I think CBCS cares more about their customers and their books, and about providing consistency and accuracy.

Grading seems about the same. But there is a huge difference in customer service, IMO.

Always keep in mind that grading can (and does) change depending on what day it is, and what the book is.

For instance. IMO, you get a slight bump up if it is a rare or valuable golden age book like Action #1. Most of us here have seen a CGC graded Action #1 that was a 2.5 on the label, but a 1.0 at best really.

There is no right or wrong grade IMO. Because grading is opinion, not fact.

I feel like CBCS grades tighter. I've seen a lot of folks on this forum take a drop to 9.6 when they send the 9.8 cgc books in for a new case. I have an ASM 252 (cgc) that is graded at 9.4. When I sent it in, I was hoping for 8.5 to 9.0 best case scenario.

My gut says cbcs grades tighter today...but not by much. Basically what I mean is the majority of the time you would get the same grade...but Theres a higher probability of a slightly lower grade with cbcs than cgc.

The reason I say "today" and not always is because I have some cbcs books graded a few years ago, 9.8s and 9.6s that don't look much better than cgc books of the same grade...in fact, I would not be surprised if they came back 9.6 and 9.4 if I sent them in for a regrade to cbcs.

Cgc does not notice detached centerfolds and sometimes covers. Cgc grades as I expect them to be, cgc has a random factor
