Show me your worst 9.8 lower left corner....3411

Collector verbogyrater private msg quote post Address this user
If you sub books and have been limited in anyway; cash, selection, age of the print etc. and you just don't have means to sift through enough to easily find the 9.8 candidates, then you'll maybe agree that the most irritating challenge is finding that ellusive sharp lower left corner.

Not everyone has immediate access to lots and lots of the latest hot books to pick the mintiest of the bunch from. Some might be too slow on the trigger to get that HoT book and we're left hoping - I mean - resort to buying from the likes of fleabay. Each time rolling the dice on fuzzy pics and overzealous seller descriptions n their grades.

So to cut to the chase, what I'd like to see is your worst of your worst GRADED 9.8 corners to calibrate my sharp comic buying skills. I know a lot goes into the grade besides just that annoying corner, but this has always proved to be my nemisis. I havent seen enough "permissable" corner crunch or the acceptable corner attrition if such things even exist in 9.8 nirvana.

So throw up a pic or two. I'm not sure if this thread will last, but maybe we can learn something. Thnx

I was just thinking about this. I just received a new CBCS 9.8 book in the mail a couple days ago and the bottom left corner is banged up. I am really surprised this graded at a 9.8.

EDIT: Checked graders notes and the left corner is noted however, it's the only flaw listed. I guess I'm a little too picky lol

Here's an upper. There's actually a piece hanging as well that you cant really see in the pic. Its like a hangnail lol. Once again though, the book is flawless otherwise

Find perfect spine corners and youve got a good shot at 9-9, seems on most of my moderns this is the decect holding them back!

What about sharp corners but light scratches?

I got hemmed up on scratches. Took an otherwise 9.6 down to a 9.0. Scratches that break color also break the back.

Bindery tears on the corners are a defect from the printing process and are very different from a "bangged up corner" and are not graded as harshly. It's important to know which is which.

Even backboards will do this to new books with black backs when sliding them in and out. That's why finding a black book 9.8 is even harder than normal..so much color break easily.

I have a right bottom corner, but this apparently happened in shipping after being graded. I bought it from another collector and he said it was all good when he shipped it to me, so I can't blame CGC's shipping.

You can barely make out the piece on the bottom right, that fell off the corner. It's still here.

Western Penn pedigree.

I want to say that the seller was an upright and fine guy. He refunded my money and told me to keep the book. He said it was worthless to him now.

I don't think it is worthless, but definitely not a sweet book like it used to be.

I actually have a raw that is better.

I love bronze picture frame covers, the light oxidation in on the white cover is a bitch though. That bothers me more than the detached chip at the corner.

It's definitely not worthless but to have a 9.8 pedigree book sustain a corner chip, which would probably bring the grade down to an 8.5, if resubbed, definitely would be a kick in the nuts for the seller.

Even so, I love those Bronze Everett covers on Subby's. They have a GA look to them.

A Spawn 1 with a bottom spine wear I can see that getting a 9.8 but if that was say the top or bottom right corner it may have been harder for a 9.8 seems like they give a little on the top and bottom wear on the spine. Maybe because of the stitching process.

@JWKyle Is it common for Spawns to have wear on the bottom left corner?

Mine has a sharp lower corner so I wouldn't say it's common for it to be blunted but if you had to have a corner with wear that's probably one of the better corners to show signs of wear. If that's the only wear I can see 9.8

Ok, Thank You.

I could be wrong, but your example looks to me like it is a bindery tear and not blunting. Blunting is a much worse defect.
