First Bronze Age Batman - #2273320

Collector Thanatos private msg quote post Address this user
Not going to lie guys, I can count the number of Batman books I own on one hand. I've read a bunch of Batman stories digitally but never felt the need to collect Batman comics until @DarthLego convinced me to pick up #24 and it's variant. That makes this copy of #227 my 3rd Batman book haha. Always thought Neal Adams #227 cover was amazing and so I picked up a G/VG (IMO) copy for $45 to have in the collection.

This was a period that gave us many top class Adams covers, you example of a gothic theme is a fine example.

Yeah, I've been looking at it on Reece's Comics for a few weeks, it was listed at $50. His site let's you make an offer and he accepted my $45. Compared to what it's selling for on ebay, I think I got a steal.

I love that cover - here's my copy!

@Thanatos you did get a steal. I think I paid about the same for mine a few years ago, but it's not as nice as yours. I got in before the price really took off.

I'll buy a high grade Batman 227 if anyone is selling?

I wonder what caused the price to take off, I thought this book was just popular because of the Neal Adams cover.

Back when I ran a storage facility in Hollywood and we were closing down, a nice older gentlemen signed over his comic collection, so he didn't have to clean out the unit. This book was one of many free bronze age books I got. Unfortunately, I was unemployed for a year and had to sell this one and other books I wish I hadn't to make rent.

I like this book and own two of them. The second one is the Mass. copy.

Awesome story, sorry to hear you had to sell some of the books you had. Gotta do what you gotta do to make ends meet though, you made the right choice. Thanks for sharing

@conditionfreak What does Mass copy mean? Is that a pedigree or something?

So jealous...for a while I was keeping tabs on eBay for a good to fair copy...even the detached covers were over $100. I eventually gave up. You got a total steal. I'm going to have to check into this Reece's thing...

It got popular because it's an homage to Detective 31. No one can afford a copy of that, so why not buy the newer, cheaper one?

@Drogio Sorry buddy I pulled the trigger because I knew I'd regret it later knowing I couldn't find it at that price again.

I've enjoyed perusing his website for deals like this, he has a good collection of comics for sale/consignment at typically good prices. He also organizes his books by CBCS, CGC or Raw...makes it easy to stick you your preference.

Yes, but it really took off within the last 3 years. Other than BvS and Batman in general becoming more popular again, I don't know why.

Yea, the 7.0, but not anytime soon, I don't think.

I'm not sure it played a larger role, but the thing that pushed me to pick up a copy (beyond just expanding my Batman run) was the Neal Adams theme variant month DC did in Feb 2016... he did a bunch of self-homage covers, and did a nice variation on the Detective 31/Batman 227 cover with Detective #49:

@vacaboca you know, that might have been a factor.

It's just a great Neal Adams cover. Honestly the story isn't anything to brag about. But that cover is just stunningly classic Batman.

#OneDay I'll have Steve press my copy and have it graded. But I need pressing added to the dashboard so I can F5 it through the whole 8 weeks of pressing.

My copy is sitting in a stack of DC books that I'd like to submit for grading. Unfortunately, it was a copy that I read multiple times as a kid, so it would probably be closer to a 6.0.

It's still a really nice copy, you don't even want to see the comics I read as a kid

Maybe I'll get my copy signed by Neal Adams this year?

PS - there's a 4.5 CGC copy of Batman 227 in this week's auction at MyComicShop.com (current bid is $81.00). No, it is not my copy.
