Frame suggestions for Lithographs3272

Collector no1lufcfan private msg quote post Address this user
Hi Guys

I have just dug out (they haven’t seen the light of day since I purchased them years ago) some Lithographs/prints and was wondering what type of frame to put them in.

Is it just a matter of getting a frame shop to put whatever type/colour of frame that I choose? or would you recommend a certain type.

Also can anyone through some light on :-

the Doctor Doom one seems to be on some type of parchment paper

and

the Sabertooth vs Wolverine seems to be on see through plastic

I’ve tried searching the DF site but that’s pretty hopeless.

Jack Kirby Doctor Doom Signed Numbered Limited Edition Serigraph Print (250) (Edition Deesse, 1991). This imposing and impressive serigraph print features the Monarch of Latveria in all his Doom-ish glory, and from the hand of his co-creator, Jack Kirby! The original version of this art appeared in a 1970 issue of Marvelmania, with a different color scheme. Beautiful colors and high-quality printing make this French edition print a true treasure. The image area clocks in at 21" x 30.5". Signed in the lower left area by Jack "King" Kirby. Numbered, 250 in the lower right.

Personally..... I like a nice simple black square frame, matte/satin finish. I would use maybe a bright or slight off white matte. That's usually how i matte my personal art & it always looks pretty nice..... with an exception for my 2 Harley Quinns & went natural with a satin finish because i used, black & red mattes. I built the frames & cut the mattes out myself.

Best bet would be to look for a local frame maker, that way you can see the different choices in mouldings and colours and pick which looks best in your eyes and what looks best with the art. Might cost a bit more but you'll be happier in the end.

@KiloGraham That was my first thought. I just wanted to ask and perhaps see what you guys did with yours.

When I get a chance, I'm going to read more about the museum acrylic that these people sell.

I believe in supporting local businesses so that is a great option. Keep in mind that national franchises such as Michaels, hobby lobby, and Joanne are owned by your hometown neighbors and have a great selection of frames often on sale. Finally you can find great frames at local thrift/charity shops such as Goodwill for pennies on the dollar. The search is half the fun....

I have a giant one of Magic Johnson and signed by him (I have a picture of him signing it), that I had framed by a framing shop. I had the framing done in the L.A. Lakers colors (purple and gold). The framing cost me twice what the picture cost me. The framing was $750.00 ten years ago. It was painted by Stephen Holland.

This is what the painting looks like. I can't show mine framed as my camera is not working.

But my point is that often the professional framing can cost more than the item being framed.

Thanks for all the links guys, lots of choices.

I think I’ll pop into a local shop when I get back to Ireland next week and see what they can offer.

I frequent my local framer in town..... well, when he's actually got his business open (He paints a LOT of murals all over the state) & I pick up my matte boards from him for matting. Expensive to have build frames but I like to get my matte from him & cut it myself because he doesn't carry that beat to hell crappy Hobby Lobby cheep stuff that's not archival.

This is just my personal opinion, but I think you should go with a basic black frame ( not shiny ) and basic black matte.
The artwork should be the star of the piece and fancy frames and mattes take away from it.

That's what I think too. a nice square satin black frame. a LOT of galleries & I use them & they look really nice. simple & elegant.

Just a couple of examples of what I get done. I don't like to use a large matte, but your mileage may vary according to taste.

I have one piece of highly offensive Ivan Brunetti original artwork framed with a cheap frame I bought at a dollar store. There aren't a lot of pieces I'd want framed. I have a three page letter on ornate stationary from a creator explaining the details of why Shooter was ousted from Valiant. I consider that to be a noteworthy piece of comics history despite much of the same information appearing later in a Forbes magazine article.

Here is one of the intaglio prints i did while in college that I matted & framed. I cut the matte & built the frame. But shows what a nice simple square black frame will do.

I've used Michaels for my prints and don't have any complaints. The prices aren't bad and they always have discounts. Just make sure the actual person doing the framing knows what they are doing. They sometimes let other employees work in the framing department (at least they do at the one by me).
I like that I can look at samples next to the print which cant be done online.
