So I know pages can be be white, off white, cream, tan etc. If the pages are cream does that mean just the color of the pages is affected or is the integrity of the pages compromised too? Will they become brittle in say 20 years or are the paper fibers just as strong as the paper fibers of pages that are white.

Browning is oxidation of the paper. Fire is rapid oxidation. Light a piece of paper on fire (not a comic book LOL!)and notice the color changes as it spreads. When the comic starts changing colors, you are seeing that process in slow motion. The darker it gets, the further along the process has gotten. As the paper gets a dark brown, it'll start to crumble into pieces. There is no way to undo oxidation. The longer you can keep it in the original "like new" condition, the longer the comic will survive.

Most of my comics will outlast my life span, so I just use reasonable care. Avoid buying comics where the paper has turned a very dark brown.

There are a number of dealers who, for years, stored comics in a very stiff plastic that kept them "locked in". But, they didn't have a top to the container, so the books were completely open to full oxidation and becoming much more brittle.

Books need to breathe. They will drown in their own feces otherwise(offgassing).

I do wish CBCS had a full page on PQ like they do for grades, there's too much left unknown

It was easy to do back when it was as simple as that card. Overstreet abandoned it bc each publisher had a different color when new. Can't downgrade a book for being off-white when it started that way.

I'd like to know how many different "owls" CBCS has for each publisher/age "starting point"? Or is it done by some other method?

I should have tried asking that at the live Q&A a few hours ago 😡

Also in the 40s, especially Fawcett Publications, not all the pages of the book were the same kind of newsprint, making each page slightly different in color.

Fawcett are notoriously cream in consistency. DCs from the early 40s, on the other hand, tended to be printed on very white paper.
