Can dry cleaning remove foxing?3006

Collector nikki666666 private msg quote post Address this user
Just a quick query?

I have a Bulletproof pink Harley rebirth #1 with a grade 9.2

the only notes on it was that the back cover had a lot of foxing. Is this possible to remove or improve through dry cleaning?

Nope. Foxing and sun shadows (the grader notes seem to mix these up a lot) are not fixable. Foxing can be stopped from growing if the book is stored correctly, but you would need to be very invasive to have a chance at removal (restoration solvents)

@shrewbeer balls! :-(

thats a shame. I suppose its best to leave as is... 9.2 isn't too bad for a rare book.

Foxing is a chemical reaction inside the paper due to age and environmental conditions the paper was exposed to, so it can't be reversed.

@nikki666666 can you provide a pic? I hadnt paid any attention to the book in question. Modern books, especially that new, shouldnt have any foxing at all. Hell I dont know if its even possible on the new paper, especially a year old. What you have is likely NOT foxing.

Looks like a dirt smudge to me lol. That hard bend in the corner of the book looks 9.2 worthy though

I don't understand how you get foxing on a book a few months old and black color. Did CGC grade this?

I want to know which company misidentified a dirt smudge as foxing.

Sorry, I've just noticed on the grade notes that it's interior foxing.
The back cover is dirt

So you think the dirt can be removed to improve the Grade? Or is it not worth the time, cost and effort?

Foxing doesn't happen on the inside of a book less than a year old.

Is this a foreign grading company?

If those notes are true, I'd say you are lucky to have it at 9.2. If the stains are just dirt and the foxing doesn't exist, you could clean it and potentially get up to a 9.4-9.6 depending on if that corner crease bends through the book and the rest of the comic is perfect

I don't want to reveal the grading company as a friend of mine is closely involved with the business. However. I think from what I'm hearing back from you guys, It would be a good option for me to get it re graded by cbcs.

Have steve press/clean it as well if you do that

I suggest sending it to Steve too. Even if the stain doesn't come out his pressing will likely improve that bend on the corner. And CBCS will solve the mystery of this "foxing." I really hope that this is a PGX book.

Maybe someone read this book as they were eating some Cheetos. Is it even possible for a book printed on this glossy material to produce foxing within a year or ever ? I would say crack the book out and put it in a Mylar or send it to cgc or cbcs either one doesn't manner and see if they say it has foxing. Halo
