Favorite non Marvel non DC comic character?2745

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user

What he said.

But since he beat me to it, Uncle Scrooge by Barks. It wasn't a superhero book and I loved my superheroes. But when I just wanted to laugh and relax I reread Uncle Scrooge and/or the Barks Donald Duck stores (Donald Duck and Walt Disney's Comics and Stories)

I grew up in the 60's, there was lots to read that sold really well (200,000+ copies to 700,000 a month) that wasn't Marvel or DC. Heck, Marvel only had one title in the top 10 sales wise all through the 60's.

I know the movie didn't do him justice.

I love the Phantom for my own reasons. His costume, his background, the nostalgia feel of the comics from a different time period. He stamps out his bad guys with a skull ring to leave his "mark" on them. He also stamps out his friends with a "good mark" ring on them LOL

I actually loved the movie. I've painted a few oil paintings too from stills of the movie. I didn't have a problem with the film, it was your typical action/adventure swashbuckler film created in the 1990s. It has the feel of a disney action film from the 90s even, like Rocketeer.

Which, by the way - is my #2 favorite non Marvel/DC character, even though now I guess you could say Rocketeer is Disney/Marvel since the movie was from Disney in the 1990s.

Nice to meet another Phantom (Ghost Who Walks) fan. Character has a long, rich history. First appearance of the Phantom in comic books predates Action 1 by six months. I waited 30 years before I found a copy of Ace Comics 11. If this book was original material rather than comic strip reprints the book would be hugely, major key expensive.

Ok uh wow guess I'll do a tally to this point. Multiple votes will be honored. Those who only voted for one character can add a vote by new mention or "seconding" or supporting a fellow CBCS choice. Red Sonja holds a lead but it's not yet a runaway.

Red Sonja 4 votes
Spawn 3 votes

Roxy Spaulding, Phantom, Zombie Tramp, Rocketeer, Cassie Hack, The Maxx, and Magnus Robot Fighter all tied with 2 votes each.

Savage Dragon, Grifter Cole Cash, Jughead, Atom Eve, Faith, Kevin Keller, Vampirella, Chief Cutter, Lady Death, Negan, Spirit, Plastic Man, Doll Man, Phantom Lady, Blackhawks, American Flag, Jon Sable, The Goon, Hillbilly, Black Hammer, Jungle Girl, Rogue 3000, Chew, Bloodshot, Uncle Scrooge, and Donald Duck all bringing up the rear with 1 vote each!!!!

Wowsers!!!!

I wondered about that too! I'd love to see the spin that some of the new talent of today would do.

No Walking Dead fans?! You would think for the going rate for some of those books and as popular as the TV show is there would be a slam dunk on this......I love the show BTW.

While more of a Character from the Funny Pages, Prince Valiant did appear in a number of different Comics over the years.

I've been a lifelong (that's pretty long) fan and have all of Hal Fosters runs from the Fantagraphics Soft Cover series (1st 40 volumes in the slip cases and now the 1st 14 volumes of the fantagraphics hard covers.

I even bought the Manuscript Press Super Sized 3 vol set from
Bud plant back in the day.

I went further and bought a Louis Marx Prince Valiant Castle set and the hard to find Mattel Prince valiant sword, scabbard and shield set.

Lastly, I have a copy of the only piece of Comic Art that Hal Foster ever drew for the Comics, the Cover of Feature Books # 26.

So yeah, PV is My choice...

It's difficult to pick from so many over the years but I
would have to say that I really enjoyed STUNTMAN, (still
hunting for a copy of issue #3), then of course THE PHANTOM
which I read on a daily basis and was really thrilled when
the COLUMBIA PICTURES Serial came out...but I would have to
admit my favorite is THE SPIRIT...from the Sunday sections
to reprints in POLICE COMICS and his own title it has always
been for me both a well crafted, enjoyable character and strip.

I used to enjoy and read the entire Sunday comics many moons ago, not so much these days. I enjoyed the Prince Valiant stories. In the 70s and 80s several newspapers turned their comics into a comic book format so they could provide more strips to their readers. I recently bought The Sunday Bulletin comic book series from the Norwich Connecticut Bulletin. It's ultra cool to see PV, Phantom, Spidey, and tons of other funnies from days past. I have Vol 1 #1 thru #40 (1981) and Vol 2 #1 thru #30.

Ok, I must be doing something wrong. The exact same photo I posted above is in my Samsung galaxy note 5 gallery. When I zoom in on that one the text and artwork are sharp and clear. Yet when I click the image above and zoom it the comics seem blurry?

They are a blast, turns out I had two extra issues I didn't know about: vol 2 #31 & #32. Got a great deal on the whole set came out to around $1 a book. I've decided to bag and board all 72 copies but will take my time flipping thru them.
