Picked these up from my LCS last week...never knew they had them...found a transformers section hidden away in a corner...these look to be 9.4 maybe 9.6. I already have these two, but in much worse shape...these two covers have always been favorites of mine in the Marvel vol 1 (1984) series...something about the contrasting orange and green background colors draws me in...

That and I believe it may have been the first story set on Cybertron in the series as well which the mythology of which always intrigued me as a kid.

Went to a half priced books sale this weekend at my local fair grounds...half a dozen of us going through boxes... I kept finding a series I wanted to start eventually and found enough copies to say, "well, might as well start this run now..." picked up about 5 comics from the first run of the solo Morbius run, not sure if they were newstand, I didn't check them out too much because they were all sealed up already.

Question... so I'm currently in the process of collecting Doctor Strange Vol 2 run 1-81. Somewhere around issue issue 40, April of 1980, and issue 39, Feb 1980, they change from the newsstand UPC to the direct editions with spider-man. Was this when they made the change? I've tried asking a few other places and no one has been able to tell me. That being said I have issues 40-81 with the direct editions, except for 55, and all the ones below that would be UPC, or strike through UPC.

In summary, here’s what you need to know about High Grade Newsstand Collecting for Investing:

High grade. 9.4 or higher is ideal. Pressing services for comic books helps greatly!
The years for comics in 1972-1990 doesn’t really matter. It was a 50/50 ratio split in distribution of direct editions over newsstand editions.
Search for comic books from the years 1990-2001 with UPC bar codes on cover.
Search for comics from the years 2002-2017 with bar codes that do not say “DIRECT EDITION”.
Newsstand Edition error or recalled books are also wise investments.

doooood! Yes they do. I would argue that they matter the most

Just because there were more newsstands distributed in some of those years does not equate to rarity. Take the Wolverine limited series 1-4 for example. 1982. Try to find 9.8 newsstands. You cant, Even though the print run was 20/80 direct/news. They are almost unicorns (except the #1, that's about a 90/10 ratio direct/news market availability). Its not because they weren't printed enough, its because most people grabbing off newsstands beat them up.

I believe it was issue 35 where they split to the two variants. That early, the direct edition would have a printed strikethrough on the barcode and the newsstand would not. Issue #40 is where they change the strikethrough to a spideyhead.

To my earlier point, on some books while the "strikethroughs" had a much lower print run, those went to mostly serious collectors who kept them in good shape while the non striked ones were well read and used.

If you are looking to be a completionist on your run, you'll have barcodes, barcode strikethroughs, and two different spideyheads.

I would much rather have my She Hulk #1 Newstand(1980) over the direct editions.

Not sure if I am understanding you correctly...

Back when they were distributed, yes if you average those years its close to 50/50.

However, look at current market availability. Its far from 50/50 in higher grades. The newsstand issues from that era did not survive.

The newstand copies were not bought in multiples and hoarded away like the direct editions. I was one of many.collectors buying multiple copies from the LCS back in the day. Cherry picking the best copies. When I would go to the drug stores to purchase comics, they were always beat up looking on the spinner racks. I like them both as long as there in high grade.

Solid 9.6 with an outside shot at a 9.8. Sry for crapps pic its in a bcw tloader inside a bag 😬. If I look realllly close there's the slightest color break on the middle spine. Been hunting an affordable high grade NS of this book for a while, happy to have it!

Got this one for nothing, thrown in with the gambit. There's a bit of soiling on the white part of the spine which I can easily clean off, and the upper right corner isnt very sharp. Other than that it's in great shape
