My LCS still does this. He'll throw a couple coverless comics in my bag most Wednesdays. I assume he figures he needs to get rid of them and maybe if a customer likes the book, they'll add to their pull list.

I'm predicting the next cover art fad right now...retro looking covers that look like remaindered covers.

Back in the early and mid 60's, a friend of my brother's that lived down the street from us worked at the news paper and magazine distribution center in our home town when he was a teen ager. It is true they would tear the top of the front cover off to return to get credit for unsold copies. The rest of the book would be trashed, but he could take all the remainder copies home he wanted. Everyone on our street had some of these books. I was a little too young yet at that time to be into it but I remember seeing them. Just think of all the key issues that were probably floating around my neighborhood given the time frame. Interestingly, given all these books by brother and all these neighbor kids had, by the time I got into comic books in the late 60's and early 70's, no one had a single copy left.

@Foghorn_Sam -
I remember seeing remaindered comics at one or two stores in the late 1960's/early 1970's. One of the stores was a small variety/hardware-type store located on Plainfield Street on the Johnston/Cranston line in Rhode Island.

Not sure if this is a remainder or if somebody needed
this top portion for some reason.
