Don't forget about the Atom Age. This is wedged between the Golden and Silver age. I think most collector's just classify it as Golden Age. I think the modern age should continue being called that for awhile.

Maybe. I dunno. There might have been. But probably not.

Since then, however, there have been a couple.

The Modern age is always the age we are in today. What has to be determined is where to cut off the end of Bonze and Copper. We don't need to name the age we are in until we are no longer in it, at which point the new age at the time will still be Modern and the age we are in today will be named something.

It could really get confusing if we go the way of tv. They're currently in the "Third Golden Age of Television".

Millennial age is my vote. Brass age would be my second.

And some comics from by gone ages are worth their weight in gold, silver, bronze,etc...actual much more than their weight for key issues.

Millennials suck, nothing should be named after them.

(no offense to any millennials who might read this, I meant the others besides you 😝 )

The only other two I could think of that are popular enough for something to stick, would be if either CGC or CBCS decided to start putting it on their labels and took it upon themselves to name the new one.

On second thought, eBay has the power as well with its category listings

"Chrome" sounds kinda silly, but it would fit the 90's gimmicks.

Those "gimmicks" remain in some form or other. "Gimmicks" are used to sell books. They weren't the downfall of that era the influx and exit of inexperienced collectors from the sports card crash and the rather indulgent distribution system was the major cause. It was also a time of change mostly artistically and writing didn't keep up. So even without "gimmicks" there waslots of flash and not much substance. Nevermind the growing markets of other distracting easy to get media.

Flash and no substance is chrome in a nutshell. A fancy coating put on top of a piece of junk.

After the Chromium / Chrome Age perhaps we could get in to the Mylar/PETG/Barex Age since we're going with references to materials why don't we use plastic mylar derivatives since we're kind of out of applicable precious metals.

@JLS_Comics then might as well call this the Slab Age.

I stick by my opinion that in order to name an age, that age has to have ended. In my opinion the Copper age has ended, people can argue about when and where it ends, I submit New 52 as the start of the current Modern, until this Modern ends at a logical stopping point, naming it is premature.

Agreed. Although, as we both stated earlier in the thread this current time period will always be the Modern Age and the other named stuff will follow behind it

To be fair, I've also heard it referred to as the tin age of comics. I do like Chrome Age since it does represent the style of all looks and no substance. Pretty covers with little inside.

Well, the way Marvel is going, we might look back on this age as the SJW Puke Fest Age.

@DocBrown the Silver Age was actually named in the 60's - I'd have to do some research but I think it was coined about the same time as the Golden Age in a letters section in a comic!

As per Wikipedia:

"Comics historian and movie producer Michael Uslan traces the origin of the "Silver Age" term to the letters column of Justice League of America #42 (Feb. 1966), which went on sale December 9, 1965.[2] Letter-writer Scott Taylor of Westport, Connecticut wrote, "If you guys keep bringing back the heroes from the [1930s-1940s] Golden Age, people 20 years from now will be calling this decade the Silver Sixties!"[2] According to Uslan, the natural hierarchy of gold-silver-bronze, as in Olympic medals, took hold. "Fans immediately glommed onto this, refining it more directly into a Silver Age version of the Golden Age. Very soon, it was in our vernacular, replacing such expressions as ... 'Second Heroic Age of Comics' or 'The Modern Age' of comics. It wasn't long before dealers were ... specifying it was a Golden Age comic for sale or a Silver Age comic for sale."[2]

haha I like it!
I'm also partial to "Indie Age" as it refers to the quality and amount of independent titles and publishers that are getting their day in the sun (Saga, S2E, Invincible, TWD, etc etc)
The output has dramatically increased and the quality vs the "Big 2" is drastically swayed in the favor of indies. (All IMO of course)

The question then is: Does it last 1:25 or 1:100 years?

The variant-media age? All these comics being digital and more marketable for TV and movies. And God damn all those variants!!! Stop with them already!

Thanks, QB! Uslan is a historical guy, for sure. If I recall correctly, he's the one who debunked the whole "Goodman and Liebowitz were playing golf" legend about FF #1.

I'm not completely convinced that the term "Silver Age" was in use in the 60's, but "Golden Age" had its origins there:

Marvel certainly called it "The Marvel Age" (seen here), but I haven't seen anything in print earlier than the 70's that calls it explicitly the "Silver Age" (though there are certainly suggestions, as in the letter above.)

No doubt, it was used verbally before, probably long before, it was used in print, but unless it was recorded, print is all we have to rely on.

So let's see if we CBCS Forum patrons can make an executive decision on the next "age".....maybe....just maybe it will stick!

So in the past we have had the following:

Prototype comics = pre-1938 - I'm not sure there is a name for this age.

https://silveragecomics.omeka.net/timeline

Golden Age - 1938-1950
Silver Age - 1956-1970
Bronze Age - 1970-1985
Copper Age - not listed as a "true" age
Modern Age - 1985-Present
????? Age

Now if we are to go by the "15 years" that each age seems to be associated to....the Modern Age would have ended in the year 2000.....but it didn't.

Did someone get tired of having to name this "new" time period.

Let's do it for them!!

:o)

Suggested names:
Variant Age
Variant-Media Age
Atom Age II (*smiles*)
Millennial Age
Diamond Age
Chrome Age
The Tin Age

******************

WOW!! Lots of different ideas people have.

Anyone else? Anyone have a favorite?

Should we create a poll?

Cheers!
