JSC X-Men Gold #1, opinions?2362

COLLECTOR DarthLego private msg quote post Address this user
I'm torn between signed vs unsigned. I like the way the sig looks on these covers, but then that's an extra $75 cost to get them slabbed with red labels. Decisions.

@DarthLego out of the most artist that do modern covers, J Scott Campbell has a very clean signature, and its well placed most of the time.

I've been pulling variants from the early 2000s out of the dollar bins.

Are you pulling exclusive variants with 3,000 or less print runs out of dollar bins or standard issue variants that were printed 50,000 on up?

Exclusives. Picked up a 300 run of a Turner Witchblade exclusive for a $1.

Cool. Which one?

Sorry, it's a 500 print run.

It's the reverse negative cover #95.

No problem. Those later Witchblade microprint variants are really cool. I have the Midtown #94 limited to 300, plus some others, like the variant error #76.

I also have the prototype Stone Museum cover...the very first one the Jays did.

I just received the signed Elektra variants he had, the Sig ended up looking like crap. It looks as if he just scribbled it on.

My opinion is that JSC is highly overrated. I liked his stuff for a bit but he hasn't grown or matured in any way for many years now.

I like his artwork but just cant justify all the variants, not just his. When I got back into comics a couple of years back i started grabbing every variant i could and quickly realised there is absolutely no point. They arent worth anything, some arent even that good and im just buying them for the sake of buying them. Black Panther and Power Man & Iron Fist are 2 prime examples of this. Books coming out with 10-15 non-exclusive variants is just insane and then add on that all the exclusive store variants which are trending at 3 versions each as well. I love some of the Turner/Aspen, Artgerm, and JSC covers, they are great art but flipping a colour to a negative or adding/removing a hat is simply an unjustified money grab. I think the target has moved from the collector and is now very focussed on the 'flipper'

This is why my motto has always been buy what you are happy taking to the grave with you, then you will never be disappointed by not being able to sell something later.

Yep. This for me, too. This also puts an automatic cap on my spending (typically $20 raw and almost no slab purchases).

I'm more of a reader than a traditional comics/slab collector. Collecting-wise, I enjoy DC Absolute HCs, Omnibus and Artist Editions more than 20-page floppies.

New X-Men Blue variants...I totally agree there are way too many variants coming out and at rediculous prices too but these are just too damn beautiful to pass up

@rtdcomics yeah, I'm glad I forgot to order the Gold set, not really digging this one, and it be stupid to get one set and not the other, so I guess I will skip the whole thing.

Can it be that this industry is trying to take advantage of its patrons with all of these variants? It clearly is looking to be a cash grab.

Shoot...whatever happened to those days that when you go to the LCS and the book you wanted is all sold out and you had to go hunting for it.

With variants popping up here and there like a "whack-a-mole" game.....sheez.....it seems that there are still plenty of people out here buying them up.

But.....20 years down the line....will the artist be a collectible? Will the variant keeps its value? Will more variants appear? Is it just taking up room?

Hmmmmm......

JSC posted some work in progress photos of these on his Twitter yesterday so I knew it would only be a matter of time before the were announced. The frequency of his variants is certainly getting a little bit out of hand, I JUST bought the gold 3 pack not even a week ago. Would have been nice to just bundle them both together and save on shipping.

I'll have to pick these up, ordered the unsigned gold set so I'll get the unsigned blue set and send them off to Matt at Trinity for his private signing in July.

Time for JSC to break out of his comfort zone and get crazy. I'm seeing much more interesting things being done by Tyler Kirkham these days.

And no, not the same result. One ends with 6 comic books, the other ends with confetti and technically a felony.

I just noticed a little Professor X in the back ground of the blue cover. Looks like his spidey senses are tingling.

It's not really the industry, per se.

This particular grab is the artist. After JSC covers his overhead, he keeps the rest.

Someone actually did a study on variants and their values. The reality is something like 75% of variants lose value within their first few months, and after three years the number shoots up to like 99.6% losing value versus their original retail price, based on the fact that you're already paying a premium.

The exceptions seem to be key issues where the same artist does the standard issue and the variant cover. Even when the variant price settled, you're still better off with the regular cover in terms of ROI.

That doesn't stop me from buying them. If I like and think it's a fair price I'll pay it.

Does anyone know the discount code on the blue set? Or if there even is one? I haven't gotten an email from them about it yet...

Just ordered the blue to go with my gold set. Looks like they restocked on some of the 3 pack sets of gold covers too, if anyone was looking to get both sets and save on shipping. Still in stock as of writing this.

Actually it is a very disturbing if he increased his print run on the gold one after it sold out.

If that is the case then I will stop buying from him.

Blue one is also still available. Seems like he is loosing touch with his customers.
