After reading earlier threads about scanning slabs, and generally being jealous of everyone else, I finally got inspired by @drchaos and his experiences in this thread.

I started watching eBay for an Epson GT-15000 large format scanner or something similar... there were multiple used units for $400 or $500, sometimes less, but I balked at the price or mention of scratches on the glass. I noticed someone post an Epson GT-20000 (newer model) with an automatic document feeder that wasn't working - it sounded like the scanner itself was though, and he was only asking $100 with $75 shipping. I offered $70, he accepted, and here I am with a GIANT thing on my desk. I guess I never saw any pictures of these things with an apple or banana next to them for scale... no wonder they're so expensive new.

I hooked it up, and while the ADF appears dead, the scanner itself works great. I'm going to try to find/buy the original lid, as the ADF is a giant useless pain in the ass, and I'd rather have a nice flat top to pile crap on... but I now have a functional large format scanner for under $150, and am a bit in shock.

Here are my first two scans - now I just have to completely reconfigure my office space to fit this thing in :/

If anyone has suggestions about where to find a stock lid for an Epson GT-20000, let me know... I'm going to see if I can just order one from Epson.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user
Congratultions on your purchase.

My first thought when I unpacked my scanner was "Where the hell am I going to fit this humungous thing?".

How many DPI are you going with on the scans?

I left everything at the default, 300dpi... which really is far more than necessary for online use. I'll probably use 150dpi in most instances. Higher resolutions take longer, result in massive files that take longer to deal with, and a rarely called for. I'll definitely play with them just to see how high I can go, though.

300 DPI is what I use as well. I can scan at that level in about 10 seconds.

Moving up to 360 DPI takes almost twice as long on mine.

Would a portable scanner work? I was thinking about buying this to scan slabbed comics. Reviews are good.

Why you need to go higher than 300? Are you counting the molecules of ink on the covers?

Sure, why not?

I just used trial and error to find the highest quality I could get in under 15 seconds.

That being said, 300 DPI looks just fine to me.

I would think so, as long as it's wide enough... but I think it would take a sure and steady hand to get a result comparable to a flatbed. I haven't tried one though, so I could be wrong - maybe there's some kind of motion tracking or image processing that captures static things well, in which case I could see the result being useful.

I'd certainly be interested in hearing about it if so!

A lot of new scanners use the wrong technology for scanning slabbed books effectively. Most of the scanners that work (Epson 10000 or higher, Microtek 800 plus, etc.) are big and clunky.

Before investing in a portable scanner I would look at the specs and see if they are comparable to those listed in my previous thread.

One thing I know led me to the new scanner was moving to a charge coupled device (CCD) scanner versus other types of sensors. I haven't looked at the specifics, but all of my other scanners (in addition to being too small to scan the full slab) had issues focusing on the book in the slab rather than the front plastic face of the slab. The result was blurry and unacceptable.

CCD was the term that escaped me when I posted earlier. If a scanner does not use CCD you want a different scanner.

I scan them at 600 dpi but I think I might stick with 300 dpi becuase it takes to long and I don't require so much detail out of each scan.

The 800 plus is faster but the 800 will also produce high quality scans.

The scan quality is great. My friend has one and has been using it for years.

It is a litle slower than the Epson I am using.

The only complaints I've heard about the GT-20000 were the size and definitely the very loud operation noise. I guess even idle noise is very loud, too.

Where/how did you get the new lid, @Waddly? I really want to toss the stupid ADF and have just a normal flat, light lid!
