@DrWatson Thanks for sharing those pictures. I didn't understand the meaning of Newtonian Effect, but I do now. The CGC case before the new one was unveiled seems to be better overall. That said, I have noticed that the CBCS case seems to be a bit more flimsy than the second generation CGC case. When I handle the CBCS case it makes a plastic creaking noise. Don't get me wrong, I like the look of the case, it just seems not to be quite as sturdy though. |

So the Batman #234 in 9.4 selling for $500 had more to do with the Newton rings then possibly the page quality of cream/offwhite? The last 2 copies before had offwhite/white and offwhite pages. But hey the good thing is I can now blame low Ebay sales to Newton rings. Dave, As far as posts disappearing in the New CGC thread did you pm the moderator or are you just speculating on why it was deleted? Folks are getting antsy? Again, why? People get antsy when they think the company or someone causing a problem doesn't respond. They are afraid to ask, don't confront or when they get a response don't get answers that give them immediate "comfort". This is what the Harshen/Matt Nelson posts did and is what I told the person I met with. The issue requires direct, with timelines, blunt admissions and very clear responses as to what they are looking at doing. |

@blazingbob It wasn't a big enough deal to contact the moderators, but it did surprise me. Others reacted to it as I've described. I can't say why folks are getting antsy, but when someone posts concerns about the thread being closed that does leave a distinct impression. Sorry, I had to leave this thread before completing my response. I have more thoughts on the subject of the new CGC holders, but let's just say I'm not among the designs strongest advocates. |

Dave, clearly it is big enough deal for you to post on two forum boards. The issue I have is while many forum members are typing away there are people who call and talk to people who can do something about it. Throwing words out on a forum board may feel good but frankly that is not how change gets implemented in the real world. |

I think the new holder will be a nice improvement once they have solved the prism or rainbow effect (called the Newton effect for some reason). And solve it they will. There are coatings they can put on the plastics. There are different plastics. Probably things they could do to keep them from touching. They have already reduced the prism effect substantially Another nice touch is that as I understand it, they have different (deeper) back halves of the outer holder. This lets them have essentially one holder but still be able to accommodate thicker books. Considering that CGC slabs books over 300 pages where CBCS cannot do much more than 100, this is an advantage for them. Things like the size of the grade number or the font of the PQ I really don't care about one way or another CGC has talked about redesigning the holder for a long time. A bit of competition - competition with a clearer holder - spurred that along. Competition is good for the consumer most of the time. |

That being said, I can get Ricketts and Borock on the Batphone without any trouble, but I'm sure anybody could without too much effort. I'd call Paulus, but then I'd have to listen to him. Talked to Pam once or twice. I just like the sound of her voice. I've never called about a problem though. It's all been pretty much chit chat. However, I did send a pretty stern email to Ricketts once about reject fees. I set him straight... just like he was a 50s housewife. Was that real world enough? |

Seriously, I believe that collectors and dealers who aren't happy with the new CGC holders ...for whatever reasons... should express their views openly, not under cover of private phone conversations. Change gets implemented through a combination of trial, error and correcting customer dissatisfaction. Reasoned public criticism is a part of that process. Heck, I even gave your post two thumbs up just for taking the time to criticize my comments on two chat boards. |

I don't like them at all - especially the change in the grade number box. Better customer service and TaT's combined with this slab has made me decide to switch all my business via Joeypost to CBCS. I'll happily buy old CGC cased books, but I really dislike the new look. |

Learning a bit reading this thread as I don't get into grading much and some of this is new to me. The ring, prism, rainbow, Newton Effect. I have a couple books with this. Is it a bad thing for the comic? |

@DrWatson Didn't know that. Thanks. I just assumed that the comic books themselves are responsible for off-gassing too so something would be needed to absorb those gasses in order to help protect the inner paper. I've seen some old backing boards that absorb those gases. |

Quote:Originally Posted by Pre_Coder The Barex plant shut down. That's why there's a new cgc holder to begin with: Ineos closing Barex plant, exiting business By: Frank Esposito October 29, 2014 Materials maker Ineos Group is closing its only global Barex-brand polyacrylonitrile (PAN) resin plant in Lima, Ohio. Ineos – based in Rolle, Switzerland – is exiting the business as a result of the closing, which will take place in the first quarter of 2015. “We regret having to take the decision to close our Barex plant and wind down the Barex business,” Ineos Barex president David Schmidt said in an Oct. 29 news release. “The business has been struggling financially for a number of years.” “We have worked diligently to reduce costs and improve profitability, but have been unsuccessful in turning around the business,” he added. “We will work with our customers and employees to ensure an orderly closure of the Barex business over the coming months.” A company spokesman said that as many as 50 jobs in Lima, Houston and Switzerland will be lost as a result of the move. Ineos plants in Lima making acrylonitrile and catalysts are not affected by the Barex move. Barex is often used as a barrier layer in packaging applications. The material was commercialized in 1975 by oil and gas firm Sohio, which later sold the business to British Petroleum plc, which then sold it to Ineos. At one point, PAN was seen as a competitor to PET in the bottle market, according to market analyst Peter Schmitt. Barex “is an excellent material for food, medical and pharmaceutical applications, though it has always been something of a specialty niche,” added Schmitt, who’s managing director of the Montesino Associates LLC consulting firm in Wilmington, Del. Schmitt also said that he believes the plastics industry in general “will hope that a suitor can be found to buy (the Barex plant) and avoid shuttering it.” “Perhaps a company other than Ineos is better equipped to work with a specialty product with small volumes,” he added. According to Schmitt, a major Barex application was packaging for Oscar Mayer-brand bologna made by Kraft Foods. As recently as May 2013, Ineos was trying to grow the Barex business. That month, it acquired the PAN business of Tokyo-based Mitsui Chemicals Inc. for an undisclosed price. That deal did not include Mitsui’s PAN plant in Nagoya, Japan.
