Different label

And my first 9.8 submission and I was to tight to spring for a press 🤪

Have I told you about the time I dropped off 3,000 comics at SDCC? Scifinator private msg quote post Address this user
This was my first submission, and a test case at that. Many of you know my back story on this so I will be brief. Back in 1982, Michael Golden autographed this comic for me, shortly after I bought it at publication, at my LCS. A few decades later, I was going through my comics and had a mishap which led to this near pristine come being bent in half across the to quarter of the comic. from the side, it looked like a hockey stick. I was devastated as it was personally autographed for me 36 years later, kablooie.

So in 2018 I did a lot of research and sent this in to CBCS at the beginning of 2019. It was a test, to be sure, as I had had another earlier misfortunate event that destroyed my first of only a couple speculative publication time acquisitions, again from the early 80's. I wanted to protect and encase all of my comics, so this was my chosen path. I had a few comics that were in CGC encasements and always felt that I was there to serve them. Spoke with Steve Borock, and he gave me a completely different sense and like our interaction, so I chose CBCS.

Anyway, the label speaks for itself....or does it??? Isn't that a new label, not the one from 2019 you ask? Why yes it is. Steve (Mr. Pancakes) Ricketts was the actual presser who brought this back to its current condition. Still being impressed and thankful for his craft, I asked him if he would do me the honor of signing my encasement if I sent for a re-holder. He did not sign the encasement, he actually signed and remarked the label!!! How awesome is that guy?

I pulled a few of my favorite CBCS graded books, still in my PC.

Start with some fun pre-code horror.

A bronze horror from my last grading submission.

Some classics. The Hulk #271 is a Mark Jewelers. I've added quite a few MJs to my collection lately.

Some modern classics. Story for the Walking Dead #1, which was added last year.... I was on my way to a show, and swung by an estate sale that morning where I found it for $6! What's more, it's the rarer early print with the black "Mature Readers" text. When at the show, I dropped at the CBCS booth to be pressed and graded, and was floored with what came back.

And favorite Art slab in my collection.

lol, my favorite memory is how in over a decade of submissions and dozens of 9.8s, I never got a single 9.9 or 10

j/k

Probably my most treasured book! First appearance of my favorite character plus some signatures from some absolute legends!

And I also wanted more. I haven’t gotten another yet but I got the next best things.

This one, unfortunately will be forever incomplete. In addition to the comic creators I also got Dolp Lundgren, Thomas Jane, and Jon Bernthal, all the live action Punisher actors…except for Ray Stevenson, whom I wasn’t able to get before he passed away

I'll have to go back through and reread the thread for other folk's books. I've seen a few and it's cool. I don't know if I have pics of my earliest sub. I might somewhere. But I will go with my favorites to get back being:

I've often considered sending it back for a CPR, but I'm happy with it.

This one was a CPR from a CGC 9.0 to a CBCS 9.4. Riveting to a lot better.

And of course:

The last one isn't exactly true, but I don't have a pic of my Neal Adams signed book. Not so much that it was a great book, but that Neal didn't have anyone else in line so we shot the breeze for about 10-15 minutes. I'm sure there are other books I have that I have a fondness for that I sent to CBCS and still own. I'll miss the best and I'll be damned if I go back to submitting to the banana hammock group.

Far too many. I was thinking of getting together all the cards, books, gifts, including the holiday exchanges, drawings, and other things throughout the years and creating one big post but that's far too much effort. Plus I've already made posts of all those things over the 7 years I've been on the forum. I appreciate everyone welcoming me to this forum. My life would be far less enjoyable without all the interactions and friendships I've made over the years.

I can’t not mention the monthly reading club that @xkonk and I kept up for some time. It never became a huge gathering but I loved having a place to read and discuss comic stories as a group. Starting with Watchmen, we read classics as well as newer stories I probably wouldn’t have read otherwise. The comics weren’t all my cup of tea but I still appreciated discussing why.

The other high point related to CBCS, was in 2019 when I was able to sit in on a panel about CBCS grading at the North Texas Comics Book Show, alongside Daryl Hayden and the great Steve Borock.

That was a great weekend!

Some more of my famously low-grade books! With CBCS gone, I don’t think the sub 0.5 grades are available from any graders anymore

And possibly the very first comic I ever bought. I still remember getting this off the rack at a gas station near my home at the time. I was most familiar with the characters from the animated series so I didn’t even really know what the 2099 line was bought I thought the cover art was really cool
