| I have a chance to pick up a Tarzan #1 tomorrow (Dell, 1948). I was thinking of bringing a Dell Wolfman book as partial trade. 1 have first print in 8.0 and a second print in 9.2. Of these two, which would you be willing to let go of in trade? I’m leaning towards the 2nd print, despite the higher grade. |

| 2nd print. I dont know the specifics of these two books but first prints take priority over 2nd prints for me everytime....keep the first print, trade the 2nd print. | ||

| That’s a tough choice. Which one would be harder to replace? I might lean toward keeping the higher graded copy, because there are fewer available copies in that grade. Looking at the CGC census, there are only 8 copies graded higher. Looking at the census for the first printing, there are 22 higher graded CGC copies and one CBCS copy. In addition, the higher graded copy probably presents much better than the lower graded one. | ||

| To me, a 2nd print is a type of reprint. I'll always prefer a 1st print over reprints/2nd prints. | ||

| Put both up for sale and see which one goes first. However, without seeing them or knowing which one would be harder to replace, I'd keep the first print. That said, experience has taught me that some second prints are harder to track down than the first printings. |

| Try not to roll your eyes at this, but a while back I decided to put a set together of all 3 prints (and the NS version) of New Mutants #100 in 9.8 By far, the hardest one to find was the 2nd print. |

| Both prints in their respective conditions are good books to keep, so ideally both would work for your trade value. I'd keep the first print, try a clean and press and see if you can't bump that one up. The 2nd print 9.2 would certainly still be an attractive book for the right collector, and hopefully for your proposed trade. Good luck! | ||

| So, it turns out I got mixed up about the grades on these. The 9.2 2nd print is one of my “Creature” issues. I had a 7.5 2nd Print & an 8.0 1st print of Wolf-Man. The vendor actually agreed to my cash price on the Tarzan book ($300), even without a trade. The guy was such a gentleman, I told him, “I’m gonna sweeten the pot a bit for you”. I showed him the Wolf-Man 2nd print and asked if he had one? He said he did, but it was beat (the corner box was cut out). I said, “how about our agreed price and you can have this?” He lit up. The guy shook my hand and said, “I feel like I’m getting the better deal!” It was so worth it for that reaction. For those that didn’t see the Tarzan #1 in the “New To Your Collection” thread, here it is! The spine has wear, but this book is otherwise very clean! ![]() |
