Is Jim Lee worth these prices?22121

Feel free to use my post as a checklist. multi007 private msg quote post Address this user
MEGACON pricing for Jim Lee.

“Option 2. 3/4 profile, more detail - $2,100-3,150 depending on character)”

Is he really worth $3,000?

Help me understand this.

This will be my first year attending mega con. Now do I think Jim Lee is work 3k… I really don’t know I think that price is a BIT steep. But I will definitely be purchasing the Miller & Lee $170 bundles. These prices are very reasonable in my opinion, plus you get prints etc.

They must have some data that supports the idea that it’s what the market will bear (unfortunately? Fortunately?).

There’s a point where the demand is met with an outrageous dollar amount to limit the number of signatures, sketches, photo ops, etc. it could be for any number of reasons for artist, writer, actor, musician. A sort of i dont like doing this, but ill offer it to someone willing to pay $x.xx.

Or they have to contrast the everyday flipper while true fans get the shaft as collateral damage.

I’d probably buy an existing slabbed sketch for $1,000 ish before paying $3,000

Jim Lee was awful good. Probably the best artist from the 90's to me.

Unfortunately, $65 is the going rate for his signature any more. He's been around for 30 years at this point. Sucks, it used to be way easier and cheaper to get signatures.

As for the art, Jim Lee fans are paying it. Not saying I am, and I'm a diehard Jim Lee fan, but apparently people are paying that. I looked it up, and I think a Frank Miller sketch was even more. Crazy.

Totally agree. I've never bought one, but I've seen slabbed sketches of his online for $1,000 to $1,500. (And yes, I've seen crazy numbers, too, like $10k to $15k). Definitely the better way to go if you're going to do it.

I'll say the Jim Lee experience for $150 is a good price. You get 3 signatures plus a print and a selfie taken with your own phone. Getting it slabbed didn;t cost extra from what I recall but they should definitely state what the additional cost for slabbing is. His profile drawing? Not worth $3k to me. I;d rather buy something better at auction from him.

At this point I’d rather support the younger talent. You can get some really nice original art for the price some charge for a signature.

Prices are prices..

This cost me I think $300 from Joe Rubenstein.

This cost me I think $250

And over 15 years ago on paper way way bigger then a comic book cover, I bought this of Alex Makev for the cheap price of $150 Australian, so roughly $100 U.S.

And it's the size of a comic book page.

If you really want a artist to draw something you want go for it. As long as you're happy with the price.

Its very expensive but he has the right to charge it obviously. I would prefer lots of other art first for that price.

Having said that he is a great guy. I sold him a John Byrne Avengers page and we spoke about me taking a look at his collection and vice versa. (he was a big Byrne collector). He offered to show me around Wildstorm at the time but we couldn't make it work right away. I asked him to maybe do a Wolverine sketch for me as well. Anyways I got really busy and the moment had passed. He's great though makes it easier to buy from him. This was before he worked with Albert, I feel the same thing happened with Alex Ross once he got an agent it was top dollar.

@James42 You are probably right. I'm going off memory but I saw Adam Hughes do this around 15 years ago at C2E2. He was charging a pretty high price and not doing them onsite. They were going to have to be sent to you. For some reason I was thinking it was around $1200 but maybe not. The lady that was with him said he will do it and it will be colored and ready to go not just a quick sketch. There were maybe a dozen people on the list. She said he didn't want to take up the weekend doing sketches and that he was there to sign books which he was doing for free.

Sadly, yes, it is where the market is with the demand and his artwork. Anything less expensive and it'd be flooded with requests, or bombed out by dealers and vendors before fans ever get a chance. Granted, there are ways to manage that, and other artists have developed different processes for handling these kinds of things. That being said, I did do the Jim Lee signing event at Baltimore Comic Con last year and it was great. $150 got me 3 signatures, a signed print, a meeting and a photo with him. The line took forever, but he was a lot of fun to speak with and very engaging with everyone. I'd do that again for sure, but I'm certainly not the target market for his sketch prices at the moment.

There was a day; and not terribly long ago (as in eons), when one could get a detailed adam Hughes sketch for $60. And one could get a reasonable jim lee sketch for free.
I know this because I experienced both.

Fans Flipping artwork; and the artists realizing that others are profiting over their goodwill to the "fans" changed everything.
Now their art is seen like everything else and handled like everything else - a commodity with a fair market value.

And unfortunately for most of us, fmv for Lee art is not something we can just go out and get willy nilly
