Tape & tape residue on cover of UK mag = CGC 9.6?22049

Been regularly purchasing U.K. mags featuring the somewhat known, but not famous 1st apps of U.K. characters (Think Luther Arkwright, Axel Pressbutton, Strontium Dog).

For Starlord 1 (1st Strontium Dog), every copy I've purchased has tape residue/remains from where 1 of 6 badges was physically attached to the front cover by tape. It would appear that every copy will have this residue/remains since every copy had one of 6 badges attached by the scotch tape.

Then I found this from 2023 - a CGC graded Starlord 1 and observed the same tape about 1/8 way up from the bottom of the book where the badge was secured upon sale of the book. In this particular issue, it looks like some of the paper was removed along with the tape and yet the book got a 9.6?!! Is this because every issue likely has this defect; and therefore not deducted for grading purposes?
Seems bizarre even if every issue has this defect?

(Forgive the 2 cut/paste, I couldn't manage 1 picture; but it is the same book)

I wouldn’t call that 9.6

It's probably a 9.6 as far as the cgc is concerned. I had an Avengers book with a tape pull on the cover that had graded a 9.4.

Even if the tape residue is forgiven, I can't imagine not deducting more for the actual loss of paper. I can't see paper loss from a tape pull on the cover grading higher than a 9.0.

Yea... on one hand I get it (barely) that they were manufactured that way.

But on the other hand it seems a much lesser grade should be the grade (call it 6.0 just for here).

It wouldn't seem an appropriate delta grade for a 6.0 grade with no other defects; vs only a slightly less grade with an accumulation of many common defects.

Then toss in the tape pull and the whole topic seems to be a cluster-you-know-what

They simply cannot stop making fools of themselves.

According to modern comic book grading standards (as defined by CGC, CBCS, and Overstreet), any tape or tape residue on the cover is considered a significant defect.

Here’s the breakdown per current CGC Grading Standards (2024) and Overstreet Grading Guide (6th–7th edition range):

Actual tape present: maximum grade 4.0 (VG), possibly lower depending on placement and visibility.

Tape residue only (tape removed but residue visible): generally treated as a stain-type defect, which limits the book to a maximum of about 6.0 (FN) — and more often 5.0 (VG/FN) if the residue is moderate or in multiple spots.

If the residue is light, barely visible, and confined to small areas, a 6.0 Fine might be achievable, but never higher than that with residue present.
